Way back in 1903, break away from the tradition, Oscar Werwath initiated the Milwaukee School of Engineering, previously known only as the School of Engineering. Driven by the innate desire to fulfil the needs of workforce requisite in the swiftly enlarging sphere of engineering, Werwath emerged as the pioneer in conceiving an American educational establishment that focused primarily on applied learning.
The wheels started turning in the unassuming location of Rheude's Business College within the sequestered confines of a classroom where the initial group of students gathered in autumn of 1903. The spark ignited by Werwath's vision spread rapidly, and in a span of two years, the school was bursting at its seams accommodating a grand total of nearly 100 students.
In 1905, Werwath and his colleague, Louis Allis, recognized the need for more space. They became pivotal in relocating the school to an expansive building, primed to accommodate the ever-growing number of engineering aspirants. The following year in 1906, the school, steeped in an atmosphere of gratification, honoured its first graduating batch, which quintupled its initial enrolment following fall.
By the year 1920, the school had adopted a novel curriculum intertwining academic grades and hands-on training to prepare students for the reality of engineering profession. Werwath's institution witnessed an upsurge of enrolment, crossing 1200, a testament to the school's success in its silver jubilee year, 1928.
Simultaneously, the school initiated an academic quarter system, which still stands as a remarkable feature of the institution. This system let students reach the finish line in merely three progressive years, four if they chose to take a summer break. And as the sun set on the summer of 1919, 52 deserving students alongside 11 esteemed faculty members carved their names in the prestigious roster of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers.
With the tides of the Great Depression ebbing, the school saw a dip in enrolment but rose above the dent and created a financial support system for disadvantaged students. By 1933, the enrolment numbers had regained their former strength, and using this momentum, the School of Engineering underwent a transformation. On July 13, 1932, they waved hello to the world as the Milwaukee School of Engineering under a brand new charter.
A significant aspect of this transformation was the introduction of the Industrial Research Institute in 1935. The institution emerged as a hotbed of innovation fostering opportunities for students and faculty members to collaborate with local industries.
Then, in 1943, The Society for the Promotion of Engineering had showered MSOE with recognition for unrivalled educational achievements and in 1944 MSOE undertook a revolutionary step of embracing female students during World War II to counteract male shortage. The end of the war saw an unprecedented surge in enrolment as the GI Bill of Rights enabled veterans the liberty to seek higher education.
On March 20, 1948, after the heartbreaking event of Oscar Werwath's demise, his legacy was taken forward by his sons who took charge of key positions at the university. The year also marked a significant shift in the gender balance with 26 percent females out of the total undergraduate population of 2,675.
A considerable milestone in MSOE history was achieving full institutional accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools (NCA), initiated in 1950 and approved in 1971. The golden jubilee, 1953, painted a picturesque portrait of diversity with 2,300 young learners from 48 states and 30 foreign countries.
In alignment with the technological progression following the Space Race, MSOE embraced modernizing reforms in their curriculum and teaching methods, even partnering with WISN-TV and WISN (AM) for cutting-edge scientific programming. The logo we have come to associate with MSOE today was designed by the illustrious industrial engineer Brooks Stevens’s firm in 1978, adorning the walls and hearts of the MSOE community to this day.
