Back in 1898, under a canopy of enormous live oaks, University of Louisiana planted its first academic seed, all thanks to an impassioned bloke named Edwin Stephens. Now, aren't we grateful to him? Fast fwd to 2021 and bam! We've got a vibrant university with a history as colorful as the Mardi Gras.
The University wasn't always the thriving institution it is now. Back in the early 1900s, Edwin Stephens would’ve been seen wandering around campus, dreaming up big plans for a humble institute. Took him a few knocks to get it standing, but eventually his vision came to life. And, boy, didn't it just!
It was in 1925 that the academic gears really began to grind. Under the guidance of Joel Fletcher, the University evolved into the Southwestern Louisiana Institute (SLI) - escalating from a two-year curriculum to a four-year one. Fletcher was a go-getter. His belief? "A university is not just bricks and mortar, it’s the people."
With the ensuing years, the World War II took a heavy toll on the campus as men were off, battling and women held the academic fort. Here’s a shout out to those brave ladies who chose books over knitting needles. Their refusal to surrender to societal stereotypes saw an increase in female graduates. Talk about, breaking the glass ceiling!
By 1960, SLI was ticking like a well-oiled machine, drawing students from every nook and corner. Even the naysayers couldn't deny it; SLI was on the map. Tooting its own horn, it appropriately redesignated itself as University of Southwestern Louisiana (USL) in 1960, making a splash on the national front.
Then came the golden era of 1974-1997 under leadership of Ray Authement – a man whose name, like his legacy, was anything but run-of-the-mill. It was under his watchful eye that the University truly blossomed, expanding research and strengthening community involvement, Authement had rolled up his sleeves and was ready to play in the big leagues!
The University got its current title, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, in 1999. A change of name, a mark of progress, an omen for bigger things. Being the largest among the nine campuses of the University of Louisiana System, the name fit like a glove.
With a laughing look towards the new millennium, it only continued to flourish. Campus saw development like never before with the addition of research centres, new degree programs and athletic facilities. You’d think we’d take a break – but no, we were unstoppable!
So there you go, from a humble beginning under live oaks to a ranking in the top-tier "national universities" category of U.S. News & World Report’s 2021 edition Best Colleges rankings. The University hasn't just grown; it's bloomed, flourished and thrived. A journey worthy of a standing ovation!
Circling back to today, University of Louisiana stands as beacon of resilience, progress and academic excellence. Open to domestic and international students alike, it dreams bigger every year. And you, my friend, could be a part of that dream. In the humbleness of Edwin Stephens, the vision of Joel Fletcher, the fortitude of the war-time women or the ambition of Ray Authement - which story will you be a part of?
