Hold onto your hats, folks, because the story of The State University of New York (SUNY) is one heck of a rollercoaster ride! Hopping back in time to 1948, the ball started rolling, or well, the books started stacking when Governor Thomas E. Dewey upped the ante for academic excellence. He signed the bill – ink barely dry, butterflies probably fluttering in his stomach – and voila, SUNY came to life.
Soon enough, the young un under Dewey's wing began spreading its academic tendrils. Picture this, 29 state-operated campuses by 1953. Talk about going from zero to a hundred real quick! And you bet each campus was brimming with keen learners, a hotbed for brilliant minds.
1962 saw Erastus Corning lend a hand to SUNY's skyrocketing growth, approving funds to trapeze into community college territory. The SUNY family welcomed 30 new colors to its academic rainbow – pretty impressive, right? Even more impressive when you know that nowadays, SUNY flaunts over 64 institutions.
In 1972, about a hundred years after the first woman in India obtained a degree in Western medicine, SUNY shook the patriarchy by appointing its first female Chancellor, Dr. Clifton R. Wharton Jr. Take it from me, she shattered glass ceilings like it was her second nature!
Then, 1985 hit, and man oh man, things were about to get even groovier. Chancellor D. Bruce Johnstone stirred SUNY's academic broth and poof – the Empire State College was concocted. Revolutionizing adult education, this was SUNY's cup of tea, personalized and flexible like no ever before.
Fast-forward about three decades. In the blink of an eye, 2011 rolled in. Walking in the shoes of a champion, we had the entrepreneurial chap, Dr. Nancy L. Zimpher, taking the reins as SUNY's 12th Chancellor. Under her watch, SUNY shot for the stars and beyond!
You don't think SUNY is done, do you? Oh, you're in for a surprise! 2017, the year The State University of New York went global. Like a boss, they spread themselves across, from Asia and Africa to Europe and the Americas. Global sun-RAYS spilling out of SUNY, get it?
Remember that entrepreneurial chap I told you about? That very same year in 2017, due to Dr. Zimpher's initiative, SUNY proved why it's a trendsetter, unveiling its world-class online platform - Open SUNY. Blending innovation and education, this was a masterstroke, amigos.
Fast-forward a couple of years to 2019, and SUNY's still turning pages and breaking barriers. The innovative Dr. Kristina M. Johnson stepped up, becoming the 13th and current Chancellor. Whipping up a jaw-dropping strategic plan, she's making sure leaving any stone unturned is a cardinal sin in SUNY Land.
So, that's about it from my end. A tale of unyielding vision and unparalleled academic growth, SUNY's journey is as thrilling as it gets. A beacon of opportunity and knowledge, it has been and continues to, light the path for inquisitive minds around the globe, and dare I say, it’s been doing a darn good job! So parents and students from India, are you ready for this life-changing rollercoaster ride? Hop on aboard!
