Once upon a time, the year is 1933, New York City. The Big Apple, the city that never sleeps, had a new star born, named Monroe College. It was a little baby institution back then, dreamt up and brought to life by a forward-thinking guy called Milton G. Jerome and a pretty smart woman named Mildred King. They had this big idea, see, to start an educational establishment of their very own.
So, there they were, brimming with energy and enthusiasm, hustling and bustling in the heart of the Bronx. Monroe College might have started as a small enterprise, but ambitious ideas don't stay small for long, do they? By the year of 1972, Monroe was recognized as an accredited junior college, and we all know that's kind of big deal!
Things had been going swimmingly for Monroe, but in 1978, things got even better. Monroe was given the thumb's up by New York State Board of Regents to become a full-fledged baccalaureate college, offering bachelor's degrees. Boy, did the founders do a happy jig!
Fast-forward to 1990. Many of the Indian students and parents out there might remember this year clearly, as it was quite eventful in our home country. Same way in Monroe College's life: they opened the school's very first satellite campus in New Rochelle, making a foray into new territory.
As the new millennium rolled in, so did the changes for Monroe. In 2004, they took another leap of faith- adding a Master's degree to their academic repertoire. Now, if that’s not taking things up a notch, I don’t know what is.
Monroe truly went global in 2007, flinging their doors open to international students from 75 countries - including ours, dear India. Joe and Milton's little college had come a long way, eh? They'd created an educational hub where cultures crossed and mingled, and academic growth was nurtured, regardless of borders. And we Indians loved it!
Hear, hear: a few years ago, in 2017 to be precise, Monroe got a pat on the back from the U.S New & World Report, ranking it as the most affordable private college in New York State. Now, that's nothing to sneeze at! Higher education needs deep pockets, but Monroe ensured you get great value in return. That's a sweet deal!
Now you might be thinking, "That’s all good and fine, but how does Monroe look out for us Desi students, eh?" Well, my friends, Monroe is acutely tuned into our cultural celebrations. They've marked festivals like Diwali and Holi on their calendars, and make sure to celebrate in great pomp! Add to it a vibrant Indian Student Association and you’ve got yourself a home away from home!
Today, Monroe has come a far way from being a small institution in the Bronx to a global educational powerhouse. Their story, like their spirit, is enduring. Its history is dotted with moments of growth, innovation, and inclusiveness, and it stands today not as a monument, but as a testament to the vision of its founders - a legacy that they continue to uphold.
And, that my friends, is the rollercoaster ride that took Monroe College from a dream to powerhouse. Who knows, your child could be the next chapter in Monroe's tale. Afterall, every story needs heroes, and Monroe College is always looking for its next ones. Ready to pack those bags?
