Around 1853, four Sisters of St. Dominic, each possessing the ability to speak German, embarked on an exciting journey. Leaving their convent of the Holy Cross in Regensburg, Germany, their initial objective was to establish a school in Pennsylvania. However, destiny had other cards to play, and they found themselves opening a school on Second Street in lower Manhattan.
It wasn’t until 30 years later, in 1883, when the pastor of St. Mary's Church in Newburgh, requested their assistance, that the sisters shifted to Newburgh. The sisters, who hailed from the Second Street Convent, started Mount Saint Mary Academy on a property that formerly belonged to the affluent Weed family.
In 1853, S. R. Van Duzer, an affluent business tycoon dealing in wholesaling drugs, moved into A. Gerald Hull's Villa. The villa occupied an intriguing location on the southeast side of Thomas Powell's estate. Van Duzer decided to rename the villa as Rozenhof. The property, after the unfortunate demise of Van Duzer in 1903 and his wife six months later, remained in the family’s possessions. It was only in 1913 after their daughter Katherine VanDuzer Burton passed away, that further plans for the property were considered.
Intriguingly, despite being offered a hefty sum for the property by the owners of a tuberculosis sanatorium, the VanDuzers turned to their neighbours, the Dominican Sisters. An offer of $65,000, a fraction of what they were offered by the sanatorium proprietors, prompted the sale of Rozenhof along with other facilities on the property. The sisters keenly purchased the property, as it allowed them to expand beyond their current facilities.
Thus, 1927 saw the inauguration of the new academy, "The Greater Mount Saint Mary", serving primarily as a high school. An additional building was converted into an elementary school, Casa San Jose.
As the Dominican sisters continued to proliferate education throughout New York-New Jersey and even in Puerto Rico, the demand for a teacher-training program became palpable. This led to the inception of Mount Saint Mary Normal and Training School in 1930, which received full approval from the Commissioner of Education in 1934.
The subsequent years brought crucial changes for the institution. Its charter was amended in 1959, allowing it to become a fully-fledged liberal arts college. This decision marked a monumental milestone, as Mount Saint Mary College opened its doors to its first class of laywomen in 1960, and by 1962, the college awarded its first-ever bachelor’s degree in Education.
Growth seemed unstoppable for the college. In 1963, Aquinas Hall became a significant part of the college's academia. The same year, Guzman Hall was inaugurated, starting off as the residential quarters for young Dominican novices. The college fortified its commitment to the healthcare field by introducing a two-year nursing program in 1964, followed by a more extensive four-year course a few years later.
In 1968, a defining moment emerged when the college, now co-ed, received full accreditation from the Middle States Association. A few years later, in 1970, the institution welcomed 58 male students and opened a fresh chapter in its history book. This pattern of firsts continued with the inauguration of its first master's degree program in 1984.
The college faced a series of challenges in 2016, with faculty voicing concerns about academic freedoms. Anne Carson Daly, the then-chair of the college's board of trustees, stepped down and was replaced temporarily by James Raimo. Later in August the same year, David A. Kennett, a renowned professor of Economics from Vassar College, took up the mantle as interim president.
After a two-year tenure by Kennett, which helped the college sail through accreditation challenges, Jason N. Adsit took over as the college's seventh president in June 2018. However, Adsit decided not to renew his contract after it expired in 2023, and he stepped down in August the same year. Dr. Adsit served as a consultant to the Board of Trustees, and Fr. Gregoire Fluet took over as acting president, vowing to uphold the college's legacy until a more permanent replacement comes on board.
