Can you imagine a time when women were denied access to higher education? Against all odds, Pine Manor College, initially known as Pine Manor Junior College (PMJC), was born from this challenging landscape. Step back with me to 1911, in Wellesley, Massachusetts. The strong-willed Helen Temple Cooke, with her passion for women's empowerment and education, gave birth to PMJC as part of the Dana Hall School. Renowned architect Mary Almy bestowed her genius, turning blueprints into beautiful educational buildings.
Fast forward to the early years when a young Ella Lyman Cabot, an author and educator, weaved her narratives into the college's fabric. And then came the formidable Eleanor Manning O'Connor, a pioneering female architect who graced the institution in the 1930s. Mary Nourse, another noteworthy academic figure, enlightened PMJC with her knowledge of history during her 1933–1934 tenure. Also among the decorated faculty was Mary Virginia Harris, a war veteran from World War II, who penned the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service program’s manual and served as a dean.
Boom, 1965! The winds of change swirled, and the institution relocated to a 78-acre property in Brookline's Chestnut Hill, once called Roughwood. This estate was once the residence of Ernest B. Dane, a prominent figure in the Brookline Savings and Trust. As the buildings found a new purpose, they were transformed into a hub of knowledge and education.
Fast-forward to 1977, the college, under the stewardship of President Rosemary Ashby, decided to broaden its horizons and started offering four-year bachelor's degrees. Renamed as Pine Manor College, the institution only saw a dip in enrollment towards the end of President Ashby's reign during the mid-nineties.
In 1996, under the visionary leadership of President Gloria Nemerowicz, the college underwent a paradigm shift, focusing on educating socially disadvantaged women of color. The financial ball was set rolling by older alumnae. In 1998, a generous bequest of $4 million by Frances Crandall Dyke allowed Pine Manor College to slash its tuition by 34 percent, opening the doors wider for deserving candidates.
Although this shift boosted enrollment and earned praise, it dwindled the college’s financial resources. By 2011, the financial hardships manifested themselves when the college failed to meet its accreditation agency's standards. Fiscal year-end 2012 marked a $1.7 million deficit. To ease the monetary burden, 5.2 acres of land were sold in May 2013, for $4.5 million to Tom Brady, New England Patriots quarterback. The college had previously sold another acre for residential purposes.
An epoch-making event unfolded in September 2014 when the college admitted its first co-ed batch, opening its doors to men, a first in its 103-year history. The following year, amidst financial turmoil and enrollment issues, President E. Joseph Lee stepped down.
The year 2016 saw Pine Manor College on probation, posing a threat to its accreditation. Tom O'Reilly took charge in May 2016 and faced a new challenge in 2017 when the town of Brookline announced their intent to seize seven acres of the college's land under eminent domain. The tables seemed to turn for the better in 2018, when the New England Association of Schools and Colleges removed the college from probation, ensuring uninterrupted accreditation.
By May 2019, Pine Manor College was celebrated by NASPA and the Center for First-Generation Student Success for its commitment to supporting first-generation undergraduates. However, the COVID-19 pandemic cast a long shadow over their finances in 2020. Boston College announced a merger with Pine Manor College, reincarnating it as the Pine Manor Institute for Student Success with a $50 million endowment. The ripple effect saw Pine Manor College students getting an option to continue for two years and transfer to Boston College's Woods College for Advancing Studies. Some faculty and staff also walked the same path, while others were offered severance and outplacement assistance.
The tale of Pine Manor College is the tale of resilience and evolution in the face of adversity, etching its history in stone.
