In the year 1848, a revolutionary movement in the realm of education saw its origin in Philadelphia. Sarah Worthington Peter, a visionary, established the first women's art school in America. Your imagination might conjure up images of this ambitious endeavor, taking shape during the rich backdrop of the Industrial Revolution. Her goal? To endow women with skills, allowing them to seize opportunities the burgeoning industries presented.
The school humbly housed itself in the grandeur of the Edwin Forrest Mansion, located at 1326 North Broad Street, Philly, from 1880 all the way through to 1960. The initial torchbearer of this institution was Anne Hill, serving as its first principal. Her service, cut short by her demise in 1850, saw her succeed by the dynamic Elizabeth Speakman, a staunch Hicksite Quaker.
However, the year 1853 brought a wave of discord when artist Thomas Braidwood expressed his doubts over Speakman's qualifications. Consequently, our history takes a slight detour to battlefields of contention, involving Sarah Peter herself and a committee from the progressive Franklin Institute. Braidwood, post this small hiccup, reaffirmed his ties with the school in the capacity of Principal, a role he held from 1856 to 1873.
Numerous theories hint at the probable cause of Braidwood's departure, one of them pointing towards disagreements with the then Director, John Sartain. Rallying up from the aftermath, Elizabeth Croasdale took charge as principal. Our time machine steers you through scores of leadership changes; from Emily Sartain's tenure (1886-1920) to the role's reinvention as the Dean, embodied by Harriet Sartain (1920-1946).
Flash-forwarding to the current decade, in 2022, Cathy Young championed the throne as the College President. Now, gear up for another whiplash as we travel back to 1932. A generous contribution of a whopping $3 million by Joseph Moore Jr. led to significant changes. In the sweet memory of his beloved parents, the school took on a fresh identity as Moore College of Art & Design. Additionally, the education pot was further sweetened by blending with the Moore Institute of Art, Science and Industry and engaging the Philadelphia School of Art & Design.
Today, the institution harbors an assortment of nine undergraduate programs. Course like Art Education, Fashion Design, Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Illustration, Animation & Game Arts, Interior Design, Photography & Digital Arts, and Film & Digital Cinema serve as stepping stones to a Bachelor of Fine Arts. With around 500 spirited women enrolled in an all-female undergraduate BFA program, the college's legacy is further amplified by coeducational graduate programs, post-Baccalaureate programs, adult’s continuing education, and even a Young Artists Workshop. Moore College of Art & Design, through its trailblazing education methodologies, caters to passionate learners across all age groups.
