History Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts

It all started back in 1805. Charles Willson Peale, a painter and scientist, William Rush, a sculptor, and various artists and business magnates put their heads together to establish what we know today as the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. The academy initially held its grand exhibitions in an iconic 1806 building adorned with ionic order pillars, nestled in the heart of Philadelphia.

The real game-changer came in 1807. That's when the Academy took a giant leap and opened its doors as a museum. Imagine the anticipation and excitement of the public during the Academy's first exhibition in 1810, where over 500 jaw-dropping paintings and statues were unveiled!

However, the journey of the Academy was not always smooth. It was rebuilt after a devastating fire razed it to the ground in 1845. But every cloud has a silver lining. This catastrophe led to something even better - the grand Furness-Hewitt building. Funds were raised, blueprints were drawn and the magnificent building that currently stands was constructed and finally opened its doors in 1876 as part of the Philadelphia Exposition.

Enter Thomas Eakins, a former student and gifted artist. Returning in 1876 to serve his alma mater, Eakins soon climbed the ranks to become a faculty member in 1878, and subsequently the director in 1882. Eakins' mind was a veritable goldmine of innovative ideas. He revamped the certificate curriculum, introducing fundamentals of drawing, painting, sculpture, and printmaking over two years, followed by individual study for the next two, guided by critiques from faculty, students, and visiting artists.

Let's talk about the women at the Academy. The board of directors took an impressive step towards inclusivity in 1844, allowing women artists to use the statue gallery for professional purposes and allowing study time in the museum. And it didn't stop there. Slowly but surely, the Academy opened more doors. By 1860, women had access to anatomy and antique courses and the Academy's library and gallery. And yes, life classes - the study of the nude body - were made accessible to women as early as 1868. The introduction of male models for study, however, came six years later following much debate.

Fast-forward to 1878 and meet Catherine Drinker. At just 27 years old, she made Academy history by becoming the first woman to teach there. Seventeen years later, her younger cousin, Cecilia Beaux, also broke barriers by becoming the first female faculty member to teach painting and drawing.

Now, let's shed some light on Edward Hornor Coates. From 1890 to 1906, he served as the tenth president of the academy. He was such a guiding light that in 1915, he was awarded the Academy's gold medal.

One crucial transformation came under Harrison S. Morris's leadership, the managing director from 1892 to 1905. He championed American art, collecting contemporary masterpieces by Cecilia Beaux, William Merritt Chase, Frank Duveneck, Thomas Eakins, Winslow Homer, Childe Hassam, and Edmund Tarbell.

Fast forward to 2010, when the Academy proudly acquired the "Linda Lee Alter Collection of Art by Women", with nearly 500 works by leading female artists. And in 2012, they hosted an exhibition dedicated solely to these female artists making their mark on the world. Indeed, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts stands today as a testament to the timeless beauty of art, and its dedication to inclusivity, innovation and perseverance. These are stories that need to be shared and cherished by every student who dreams of studying art.
