Back in good old 1899, a small academic seed was planted on the high arid plains of Arizona. A place we now know as the Northern Arizona University.
Can you believe, the journey of this grand institution started with just 23 pioneering students under its roof? Now, isn’t that a humble beginning! Just like many before them, these enthusiastic scholars were the steppingstones of an institution that now boasts more than 30,000 students. All fired up and ready to face the world.
The founding father of this great intellectual jungle was a certain Mr. Almon Nicholas Taylor. A man who, fueled on dreams and dedication, embarked on the mission to provide first-rate education to students, in, what was then, the desert-dominated Arizona territory. This was at a time when the idea of higher education institutions was just taking off. And boy, did he blaze the trail!
The earlier version of the university, known as Northern Arizona Normal School, changed several names before settling on Northern Arizona University in 1966. Talk about an identity crisis! But hey, good things take time and evolving names is as good a proof as any.
Never a place to shy away from challenges, it stood its ground to adversity and financial crisis. For stanza, during The Great Depression, the institution stared into the abyss of closure. But strong will, perseverance and a tiny 2¢ tax did the trick to keep the doors open. Now, that's a switcheroo!
In terms of architecture - and boy does this place have some good looking buildings - the 'Old Main' building, built back in 1894, is the granddaddy of the campus. A locale steeped in history, it proudly witnessed the transformation of the university from its initial 2 acres to the sprawling 740 acres of modern classrooms, libraries, and world-class facilities it is today.
As the oak of knowledge grew, so did its branches. The university took the challenge of taking education to the doorsteps of students. Quite literally! The 'Extended Campuses' offer academic programs and degrees to students who can't make it to the main campus. A noble initiative, innit?
In the blink of an eye (well, over a century), this institution has morphed into a center of excellence nurturing bright minds and driving innovation and research. From those initial 23, it has welcomed students from across the globe. A real kaleidoscope of cultures and ideas, wouldn't you say?
