Paragraph 1
The seeds of Bryant University were sown in 1863 when founders, John Collins Bryant and Henry Beadman Bryant, created a national school focusing on bookkeeping and business communication. Over time, this established chain of schools was recognized as Bryant & Stratton College.
Paragraph 2
A teacher from the school, Thomas Stowell took ownership of the Providence branch in 1878. Eventually, in 1916, following Stowell's demise, it merged with Rhode Island Commercial School, conceived by Henry Jacobs in 1898. During these early, formative years, instructions were held in the Butler Exchange building in downtown Providence, which no longer stands.
Paragraph 3
Bryant transitioned into a non-profit in 1949 and began offering a master's program two decades later. From 1935 until 1971, Bryant situated itself on College Hill besides Brown University, notably at "South Hall" - an old hospital building at the junction of Hope Street and Young Orchard Avenue.
Paragraph 4
To continue expansion, neighboring buildings were incorporated into Bryant territory. A historical trivia code is that 'South Hall' was the 19th-century residence of Byron Sprague and later became Isaac Gifford Ladd's abode. When Bryant University moved to Smithfield, Brown University purchased the premises, which then became Brown's East Campus.
Paragraph 5
Something magical happened in 1967. Earl S. Tupper, a Bryant alumnus and the man behind the invention of Tupperware, made a generous gift to Bryant College. He donated his sprawling, 428-acre estate for crafting a new campus. Tupper was rewarded with an honorary Ph.D. in Humane Letters and the campus was named in his honor.
Paragraph 6
In 1971, Bryant made its decisive move to this modern campus. The famous Bryant Archway also found a new home. It was carefully transferred from Providence to Smithfield. The phenomenal Emin Homestead and Captain Joseph Mowry homestead once occupied the current campus land. It's incredible that numerous descendants of the original settlers continue to live close to the campus.
Paragraph 7
A fascinating tradition lives on at Bryant! Students symbolize the termination of their educational journey by walking through the archway which was constructed on Young Orchard Avenue by a notable steel tycoon named Isaac Gifford Ladd, in 1875. As legend has it, students who venture through the archway before graduation put their graduation chances at risk. Over the years, this has given rise to well-trodden paths around the arch.
Paragraph 8
Reflecting its educational mission, the Bryant Seal showcases an ellipsoid globe with quills signifying business communication. In the background, a torch represents liberty, academic freedom, and learning. The university's Latin motto, "Cognitio. Virtus. Successus." translates to – Knowledge. Character. Success.
Paragraph 9
The ninth president leading Bryant University is Ross Gittell. Despite growth after the move to Smithfield, crisis struck Bryant in the early 1990s. With a nationwide drop in college applications, Bryant saw dwindling interest and its enrollment slumped below 2,000 students. Numerous facilities required upgrades and at its worst, the school faced a $1.7 million budget deficit.
Paragraph 10
Came 1996, and a former Navy captain and U.S. Representative, Ronald K. Machtley was brought on board as president. Machtley spearheaded various initiatives, such as a capital campaign, building new facilities, upgrading old ones, and renovating the main classroom building and the student union. Owing to successes under his leadership, Bryant transitioned from college to university in 2004. Its endowment totaled $171 million in 2007, marking a net increase of $169 million in just a decade.
Paragraph 11
A historical moment occurred on February 28, 2008, when former U.S. President Bill Clinton campaigned at Bryant University. This was the first instance of a former U.S. president or presidential contender giving a speech at the university. To add to its glory, Former U.S. President George H. W. Bush delivered the 2008 commencement address, and was awarded an honorary degree. Within three months, Bryant hosted two of the only three living former U.S Presidents, a proud achievement indeed!
