Let's wind back the clock to 1962 when Franklin Pierce College was born. It was a brainchild of Frank S. DiPietro and named in tribute to the 14th U.S. president, Franklin Pierce, who was also the only president from New Hampshire. The college flagged off its journey with its first batch of students during the chilly winter of 1963. The student body comprised slightly less than 100 pupils, taught by six full-time educators, housed in four regal buildings, the Manor, Rindge Hall, The White House, and Ravencroft Theatre.
The appliqué of the infrastructure was cramped, but charming. Educational classes were held in downtown Rindge, utilizing nearby buildings as residential halls. But as more students arrived, new locations emerged with Crestview Hall being built in 1964. Sharing dual roles of dormitories and classrooms, the college relocated to its current location, gradually expanding by building Monadnock and Edgewood halls in consecutive years.
Despite the expansion, Franklin Pierce College had a peculiar issue - overcrowding, a sign of its popularity. Catering to over 500 students, Granite Hall came into existence in autumn 1966, with health amenities in the basement. Later, New Hampshire Hall and Mt. Washington Hall were constructed in quick succession, providing additional residential space and a haven for music enthusiasts.
Franklin Pierce was still one ambitious project short of a complete college, though - a fully-equipped library. A library construction project started in 1967, and by 1969, the institution was home to a beautifully stocked library, signalling the suite of academic and administrative offices, computer laboratories, television production center, and a radio station in future years. Marcucella Hall was the quintessential addition in 1971, accommodating more classrooms and clearing up space in Crestview and Monadnock halls.
The college's first ever graduation ceremony in 1967 was a cherished memory, further sweetened by accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges in 1968. However, financial distress quickly followed. Initiative and leadership of the then New Hampshire governor Walter Peterson helped the college regain its financial stability in the late 1970s.
Come the early 80s, Franklin Pierce was ready for expansion yet again! The Emily Flint Campus Center started construction in 1985. Housing student activities offices, the post department, conference centers, cafeteria, and bookstore, the center became the hub of student life. Old buildings were restructured, and a cable television system was installed. Even trailers were introduced for housing by 1987.
Mountains were scaled in 1988 with the addition of Mountainview – apartment-style residences primarily for juniors and seniors. Satellite campuses emerged around New Hampshire in the 70s and 80s mainly catering to adult education. The mid-90s transformation led to constructing Northwoods, offering more apartment-style residences. Walter Peterson, the torchbearer of Franklin Pierce College, passed the baton to George Haggerty, the new college president in 1995.
Landscape continued to change with the construction of Petrocelli Hall in 2008, the welcome of the largest group of freshmen in history - a total of 616 new students in 2012, and the million-dollar dining hall upgrade and announcement of Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Health Science and Athletic Training Center. They also celebrated the transition from a college to Franklin Pierce University in 2007.
Among the notable leaders was Andrew Card who initiated the demolition of Ravencroft Theatre and Crestview Hall in 2015, announcing the university's plans to establish a new science center. But notable among all was Kim Mooney, the institution's provost and vice president for academic affairs, who stepped up as the institution's first woman president and an alumna. History was again written when Mooney was officially installed as the university's sixth president on September 23, 2017, a day shared with the Family Day and Homecoming weekend.
