Here's an engaging story that takes you through a century-old journey of an ambitious university, the Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU), which braved odds, changed names, and abodes but abided its quest for enlightenment.
This tale begins in the year 1902 in Los Angeles, where it was born out of a relentless pursuit of a group of dedicated Nazarene Church ladies. These women dared to put into action a dream they shared, despite the initial scepticism from Phineas F. Bresee, who is one of the authorities at the Church of Nazarene. Their idea was simple but earnest, to set up an uncomplicated 'Bible College' for breeding ministerial and lay leadership within the blossoming Nazarene denomination.
Bresee was reluctant, unsure about their plan's potential. Perhaps, the idea of a simple Bible college did not mould seamlessly with his vision of a full-fledged Christian school. His scepticism led him to promise minimal assistance. Yet, the women undeterred, pressed forward, fueled by funds secured from their husbands. Consequently, an institution that we now know as Pacific Bible College came into existence under the diligent supervision of Principal Mary Hill.
The year 1906, heralded a significant shift. Mr and Mrs Jackson Deets, stirred by the university's potential, made a generous donation. Consequently, Bresee's interest in the college was inflamed! He saw a vision of a refined liberal arts college shaping up within the framework of the re-christened Deets Pacific Bible College. United in vision, Bresee and Deets began envisioning what would be the Nazarene University: an eclectic amalgamation of academy, liberal arts college, and bible school.
As the Nazarene Church officially recognized three of its educational institutions in 1908, one among them was the newly renamed Deets Pacific Bible College. But, the saga of name changes continued, and in 1910, it shifted to Nazarene University. A noteworthy turn of events saw the university moving to the magnificent Hugus Ranch property in Pasadena, California. Conflicts on theological frontlines and financial constraints led to yet another name change to Pasadena University in 1917.
Steeping into 1924, another name change occurred, and the university became known as Pasadena College. It triumphantly secured accreditation from the esteemed Western Association of Schools and Colleges by 1949. The 1950s marked the end of the college's preparatory program.
In 1973, a dramatic change ensued. The university saw a shift of domicile as it relocated to the former California Western University campus located on Point Loma in San Diego. Previous plans to move to Santa Ana had failed to materialise. Post the successful relocation, the institution existed for a whole decade as "Point Loma College: An Institution of the Church of the Nazarene".
1983 ushered in yet another name transformation to Point Loma Nazarene College (PLNC). A milestone in its journey was marked in 1998 with its transition to the current name, Point Loma Nazarene University. Today, as we trace its roots back, the story of PLNU's transformation through the years stands as a testament to indomitable spirit, perseverance and the power of belief.
