Back in 1949, an inspiring milestone was achieved in the education landscape of Southern California. San Diego College for Women and San Diego University, both of them an assemblage of the College for Men and School of Law, received their charters. Guess who opened their doors welcoming their first class of students in 1952? It was the College for Women, all braced up to inspire generations to come.
The Most Reverend Charles F. Buddy, D.D., then acting bishop of Diocese of San Diego and Reverend Mother Rosalie Hill, RSCJ, a Superior Vicaress of the Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, are the notable figures behind this remarkable establishment. As far as they went to gather the resources to charter this educational institution, is as far as a stretch of land known as "Alcalá Park," named after San Diego de Alcalá.
By 1954, the College for Men and School of Law made their grand debut. Initially, they found their abode in Bogue Hall, formerly University High School that gradually transformed into the renowned University of San Diego High School. Starting from 1954, Alcalá Park, besides being a seat of learning, also served the diocesan chancery office and housed the episcopal offices, until they were moved to a repurposed Benedictine convent turned pastoral center.
1957 saw another wave of expansion with Immaculate Heart Major Seminary and St. Francis Minor Seminary relocating into their state-of-the-art facility, now called Maher Hall. Immaculata Chapel, now an entity no longer bound to USD, also opened during the same period as a part of the seminary facilities. For almost 20 years, these institutions cohabitated Harmoniously at Alcalá Park. Unfortunately, Immaculate Heart had to say goodbye at the end of 1968 and its edifice was renamed De Sales Hall while St. Francis persevered until 1970, then moved to a different location.
The year 1972 witnessed the birth of a new name to the familiar campus, the co-educational University of San Diego. Post its naming, USD has made tremendous leaps in growth, expanding its capabilities, assets, and academic programs. This marvel wouldn't have been possible without the indispensable contributions of the student body, the local community, patrons, alumni, and numerous helpful organizations.
Embarking on an expansion voyage in the mid-1980s was a notable period in USD history. Optimistically, this progress pace continued to 1998 when Joan B. Kroc, philanthropist and spouse of McDonald's magnate Ray Kroc, made her generous contribution of $25 million to help raise the Institute for Peace & Justice.
More kind-hearted patrons followed the suite, incoming from weight-loss mogul Jenny Craig, inventive genius Donald Shiley, investment banker, and alumnus Bert Degheri, and an impressive $50 million from Mrs. Kroc, gifted posthumously. Consequently, Jenny Craig Pavilion (a sports arena), the Donald P. Shiley Center for Science and Technology, the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies, and Degheri Alumni Center came to existence.
