Let's embark on a journey back in time, to the year 1890, when the United States passed the Second Morrill Land Grant Act on August 30th. This particular act held a unique mandate: southern and border states were required to create colleges for black students, due primarily to the racial segregation prevalent in their systems. Here, on November 26th of the same year, the seeds of Savannah State University were sown, with the Georgia General Assembly passing legislation to establish the Georgia State Industrial College for Colored Youth.
This wouldn't have been possible without Richard R. Wright Sr., the first principal of the school. The institution initially functioned for several months of 1891 from the historic Baxter Street School Building in Athens. But, on October 7th, 1891, it found a permanent location in Savannah where Wright took the reigns as the first president.
The university, in its early stage, comprised five faculty members, teaching a handful of students, precisely eight, all of whom hailed from the Edmund Asa Ware High School in Augusta, a pioneer in providing education to black citizens. As interesting as it gets, the campus was constructed atop the former lands of Placentia Plantation, which also hosted its colored cemetery.
Come 1898, and the college hit a remarkable milestone when it awarded its first baccalaureate degree. Now let's fast-forward to 1921 when the first female students stepped foot as campus residents. A significant development took place in 1928 when it transitioned to a full four-year degree-granting institution, wrapping up its normal school and high school programs.
Talking about normal schools, they were quite a fixture in the 19th-century United States. Inspired by the German model, these schools were designed to provide education to future elementary school teachers. With swelling towns across the US, and an urgent need for educating the newly freed four million people and their descendants, normal schools were the need of the hour. Initially, these schools offered two- or three-year programs but eventually evolved to four-year ones or were left in the dust.
In 1932, the college was welcomed as a full member of the University System of Georgia, adopting a new name, Georgia State College. It continued to fulfill its mission as a land-grant institution for African-American students till 1947, post which the title was handed over to Fort Valley State College. Come January 1950, a new name surfaced - Savannah State College.
Fast-forwarding to 1996, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia provided Savannah State College with a new accolade, upgrading their status to a state university and consequently changing the name to Savannah State University.
In 2008, a proposition surfaced to merge Savannah State University with Armstrong Atlantic State University. However, it didn't pass the test. As we look back to the institution's remarkable contributions, let's not forget that it's the pioneer in the state of Georgia to introduce the homeland security degree program. Besides, it emerged as the second institution in the University System of Georgia to provide students with wireless internet connectivity, creating a versatile learning environment.
