Buckle up folks! We're going on a journey right back to the year 1855! Whoosh... That's when the tale of Pennsylvania State University - often fondly called Penn State - begins. It was once this fella named Evan Pugh who threw the first brick. Quite the visionary, this man thought it would be grand idea to start a high-education institute for agricultural science. Who'd have thunk, right?
Well, he wasn't alone in his quest! He had in his corner, chappies like James Irvin and Frederick Watts, quick to take a shine to the idea. These pals went above and beyond to lay the stone of a university that today, stands tall as one of the top-ranked universities in the world!
Now, let’s fast forward to 1863, 'cause that's when things really started to look up for Penn State. That's right folks, it was officially recognised as a land-grant institution. This was all thanks to a handy piece of legislation - the Morrill Land-Grant Act. Absolutely crackers, isn't it?
Penn State had its fair share of rocky patches too, it ain't all sunshine and roses. The 1880s saw the campus grappling with financial difficulties. Bit of a bummer, that one.
