Benjamin Kurtz, a cleric with a strong passion for education, set the foundation stone of Susquehanna University. In addition to setting up Gettysburg Seminary, he envisioned another establishment that would help blossom American Lutheranism, a version of Lutheranism he passionately followed.
Are you wondering why Kurtz put in this much effort? Well, he had a mission. Kurtz aimed to groom men with the spirit of the gospel ministry, especially those unable to undergo extensive training due to age and circumstances. He desired to empower them with deep theology, so they could serve faithfully as ministers of Christ.
As this vision reverberated, support for his mission started to trickle in. The American Lutherans of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, was amongst the firsts to kindle this feat. With a commitment of $22,000 and 50 keen students, the Lutheran Church also permitted the temporary use of its church facilities. However, they had a condition - expand the Institute into a junior college and erect a sister college solely for women.
On September 1, 1858, decades before independence of India, the Missionary Institute of the Evangelical Lutheran Church accompanied by Susquehanna Female College breathed into existence. 23 days later, they received legal recognition. The university consisted of two main departments - theology and classical studies. In 1873, the sister college dissolved, converting the script of the institute into a co-educational one.
In 1895, this institute came to be officially known as Susquehanna University. How did it retain such a unique name, you may ask? Well, the university is located by the Susquehanna River's beautiful and scenic banks, hence was aptly named after the river.
It was the dawn of the 20th century and lots transformed at Susquehanna University. After recently starting to provide bachelor's degrees, the university decided to change its name to reflect the evolutionary step. That was not all; in 1903, the University Board finalized upon the official university colors, orange and maroon.
When the 1920s arrived, it brought along a gust of development and change. Student enrollment increased exponentially, the campus not just expanded in its size but also underwent significant refurbishments. Learning at Susquehanna also became more exciting as the academic departments increased and the university introduced enhanced course offerings.
And with that, we conclude the riveting story of a modest institute that blossomed into a full-fledged university, shaping thousands of lives along the way.
