The saga of Pennsylvania State University, or Penn State as it is lovingly referred to, began way back in 1855. A pioneer in the farming sector, the brain behind the establishment was James Irvin, a high-spirited farmer turned iron tycoon. You see, he was impressed by the whole idea of agricultural education! And, well, by using a good chunk of his own land, he gave Penn State its first ever dwelling!
Zoom into 1859, and it becomes the first school to participate in the Morrill Act. Quite a feather in the Penn State's hat, innit? This Act granted lands to colleges, with the purpose of promoting the artsy stuff like science and agriculture. The interesting part is that the Morrill Act takes after Justin Smith Morrill, a U.S. Representative who played a huge part in getting it passed!
Stepping into the 1860s, Penn State had become a full-fledged college! The institution, however, had to jump through a hoop or two during these times as there were financial issues and the Civil War was at hand. Despite all this, Penn State never let go of its motto of quality education, ran the academic marathon with sheer determination, and came out with flying colors!
Remember when our friend Irvin donated land earlier? Well, by 1875 he donated a good chunk more, nearly doubling the size of the campus. Penn State was no longer just a humble college, it had grown into a vast, bustling community of voracious learners.
The initial years of the 1900s saw Penn State getting its first mascot! Any guesses what it was? You're right! It's the Nittany Lion that fiercely represents the university even today. The adoption of the lion was an interesting escapade in itself, more a spur-of-the-moment decision of a senior student than a planned move.
Leap into 1950, and Penn State had grown enough to open more campuses, a total of 12 to be precise. This was a colossal move, not just in terms of expansion, but also to ensure that students seeking a quality education could get it across wide geographies.
The University continued to grow and evolve, shaping and being shaped by the times. And by 1985, it established the World Campus, the online version of Penn State. Now, that's what we call keeping up with the trend!
Amidst all the merriment, Penn State experienced a temporary setback in 1998. Like the saying goes, "No rose without a thorn," Penn State had its share of thorns when it faced accreditation issues. But, Penn State, being the fighter it always was, faced the issue head-on, worked on its shortcomings, and regained its accreditation the very next year.
Now, with a rich history of more than 150 years behind it, Penn State stands today as a beacon of academic excellence, with more than 100,000 students and a massive campus of 8,556 acres. It continues to inspire and nurture students globally, with many coming from India as well!
So, to every Indian student out there, whether you want to be a scientist, an artist, a business shark, or a social worker, Penn State offers extensive programs and a whole world of opportunities at your doorstep. Get set to soar higher!
