In 1886, an institution was born. Birthed by the Society of Jesus, the esteemed St. Ignatius College – a tribute to Ignatius of Loyola – opened its doors for the first time, dedicated entirely to men's education. With a core focus on imparting knowledge, St. Ignatius started its unwavering journey, never once stopping the degree-granting tradition it had set for itself.
St. Ignatius wasn't alone in this pursuit, though. It was the 19th in an extended family of 28 Jesuit colleges and universities that formed a network across the United States. Broadening its horizons, it joined the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, solidifying its place in the sphere of Jesuit education.
Then, something shifted in 1923. St. Ignatius evolved, adopting a new identity — John Carroll University, in honour of the first archbishop of the Catholic Church in the United States, the founder of Georgetown University himself. Along with its new name, the University found its home in 1935, moving from Cleveland's west side to its present spot in University Heights, a cosy suburb situated 10 miles (16 km) to the east of downtown Cleveland.
Remember the high school section of the original St. Ignatius College? Well, it didn't budge an inch. To this day, it stands proudly on the original site, carrying the heritage of its original name in Cleveland. Meanwhile, University Heights got a brand-new title, replacing "Idlewood" in correspondence with the construction of the campus.
World War II was a period of turmoil globally. It also changed the direction of John Carroll's journey. The University stood among 131 colleges and universities countrywide, introducing the V-12 Navy College Training Program. This program offered students a chance to commission in the Navy.
Swaying along with the changing times, the university became fully coeducational in September 1968, tearing down the barriers for female enrolment. The College of Arts and Sciences began to welcome women for the first time, marking a new era.
In more recent times, you can witness John Carroll University transforming extensively. In 2003, it unveiled Dolan Centre for Science and Technology, a behemoth of a structure spanning 265,000 sq ft (24,600 m2) and built at a cost of $66 million. If you're wondering about the name, it comes from alumnus Charles Dolan, the founder of Cablevision and HBO, and his beloved wife Helen Dolan, both of whom had spent memorable years at John Carroll University.
A decade later, in 2011, it bid adieu to the Bohannon Science building while celebrating the completion of the Hamlin Quad enhancement project. Enter 2017, a year that introduced a significant change in the administration. The University's board of directors named Michael D. Johnson, PhD., as the first non-Jesuit president. Johnson, formerly the provost at Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, took his place at the helm on July 1, 2018, official inauguration on September 6, 2018.
Yes, dear reader, this is John Carroll University, where history and progress walk hand in hand. From being a solitary institution to becoming a part of the wider Jesuit educational network, from shifting bases to diving into innovative projects, John Carroll University receives each challenge with open arms and shapes its journey accordingly.
