Our tale begins in 1894, when Keist Business College came to life on the bustling Main Street of Waterville. Pioneering the concept of nonsectarian, co-educational career training, the college was initially nestled above the F.W. Woolworth Company within the Edith Building, spanning across three floors.
The saga continues as we turn the page to 1896. Enter William Morgan, an astute man who purchased and rebranded the promising institution to Morgan Business College. The real adventure, however, began in 1911, when the Morgan Business College caught the attention of John L. Thomas Sr, a railroad administrator hailing from Peterborough, New Hampshire.
Drawing on his personal experience as a business college graduate, John L. Thomas Sr. recognized greatness when he saw it. Giving his personal touch, he added his name to the college, rechristening it as Morgan-Thomas Business College. For 50 years, the hallowed halls of the college buzzed with the hopes and dreams of aspiring accountants and secretaries.
As the clock ticked over to 1950, the college was once again renamed - this time to Thomas Junior College, and finally found a new home in 1956 on Silver Street, in the graceful old house of John Ware.
The campus of the 1960s was brimming with energy. The decade brought not just infrastructural changes, like dedicated men's and women's dormitories, but significant growth and development. The college outgrew the title of 'junior' and embraced a new identity as Thomas College in 1962. Displaying how far it had come, the Maine State Legislature acknowledged the college's prowess and awarded it the right to confer four-year degrees in 1963.
Perhaps the highlight of this decade was the establishment of the Mariner Library in 1964, a tribute to the Chairman of the Thomas College Board of Trustees, Ernest C. Mariner. This period also hailed the construction of a theater for lectures and dramatic presentations. As the college's reputation escalated, so did the need for more space.
By the end of the 1960s, the college had outgrown the Silver Street Campus. Showing maturation, it bought over 70 acres of land along the serene Kennebec River in 1966, relocating the entire college to the West River Road Campus.
In March 2011, the college received a golden windfall. The Harold Alfond Foundation made a historic pledge. It announced a gift of $5 million, the largest in the history of Thomas College. This tremendous fund was aimed to support the construction of the Harold Alfond Academic Center and establish the Harold and Bibby Alfond Scholarship Fund. A master plan was also unveiled at this time, laying the path for the future construction of a dozen new buildings.
In April 2012, the Thomas College scripted of a new chapter, announcing Laurie G. Lachance, M.B.A.'92, as its fifth president. Lachance's appointment held significant value, as she personified two firsts in the college's history: the first woman and the first alumna to head the institution.
As we wrap up this brief trip into history, we realize that studying at Thomas College is not just about education; it's about becoming a part of a legacy, nurturing aspirations, realizing dreams, and writing your own chapter in this inspiring narrative.
