Picture this - the year was 1968 when Jess. C Moody, a visionary and pastor of the First Baptist Church of West Palm Beach conceived an idea. A unique educational institution that would serve to fuel the light of knowledge. This is how Palm Beach Atlantic University was born. Moody was our Captain of the ship until our first glorious graduating class of 1972. Now imagine, relieving him of his academic commitments, was none other than two devoted laymen from the church, Donald Warren and Riley Sims. Both gentlemen continued to lend their invaluable support and time over the years, with Warren helming the throne of Trustees for an impressive 38 years until 2007.
On a hot summer day in July of 1972, the baton was passed on to Warner E. Fusselle, former president of Truett-McConnell College. Fusselle orchestrated the process of gaining accreditation for the university from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. By December, the accreditation was in our hands! Success was too sweet.
Let's fast forward to 1978, George Borders, the Vice President of Student Affairs at Stetson University stepped in as the third president of Palm Beach Atlantic University. His popularity was not just restricted to the student body, but also greatly appreciated by the Florida Baptist Convention. However, life is full of changes. After a brief stint at our university, he left in 1981 to become the president of the Florida Baptist Foundation. Enter Claude H. Rhea. Under his leadership, not only did the university flourish with the development of the Rinker campus, but our academic programs graph also saw an upward trend.
Let's throw light on our next president, Paul R. Corts who formerly presided over Wingate College. True to his unique style, he introduced two graduate programs, significantly expanding our university's offerings from 1991 through 2002. However, Corts had a different calling and resigned his post in 2002 to take up responsibilities with the United States Department of Justice as Assistant Attorney General for Administration.
The year 2003, marked a new era with David W Clark, President of FamilyNet and founding provost of Regent University taking over the reins. His tenure saw unprecedented growth in university enrolment, from 2,600 students to a whopping 3,291. Under his dynamic leadership, the Warren Library and a mini campus in Wellington were established. He also managed to secure a 96-acre land for a new athletic campus. Our university budget witnessed substantial growth from $43 million to $73 million in his tenure. Record, isn't it? Clark decided to hang his boots in June during the academic year 2008–2009.
Then arrived the eventful day, July 1, 2009, when Lu Hardin, a former Arkansas state senator took charge. Having previously served as the president of the University of Central Arkansas, he was well equipped for the role. However, his term faced a premature end as he tendered his resignation on March 4, 2011, prior to pleading guilty on federal charges.
In the wake of Hardin's scandal, our university's vice president for development, William M. B. "Bill" Fleming, Jr., took over as interim president on March 10, 2011. A testament to his leadership acumen, following a nation-wide search, our trustees bestowed upon him the mantle of university's eighth president from May 8, 2012.
As we step into the present, we find Debra Schwinn helming the university. Announced as the new university president on January 16, 2020, she succeeded the retiring Fleming and took office on May 4, 2020. Like they say, the only constant thing in life is change, but rest assured, our commitment to providing quality education remains unwavering.
