It was a cold day in 1812 when eight visionaries realised their dream of bringing quality education to their community, a dream that blossomed into Lycoming College. Fuelled by farsightedness, they founded the 'Williamsport Academy for the Education of Youth in English and Other Languages, in the Useful Arts, Science and Literature'. Initially, the academy only taught boys, but in the progressive stride of the 1830s, it opened its doors to girls as well.
By 1847, Williamsport showcased its commitment to education by introducing a public school system. Around this time, a Methodist preacher named Benjamin H. Crever himself heard that the academy was for sale. His proposal led to the Baltimore Conference purchasing the academy. They transformed it into the Williamsport Dickinson Seminary in 1848, under the umbrella of Dickinson College.
Rev. Crever emerged as a key figure in this metamorphosis, helping the academy take its first baby steps into the world of higher education. The Civil War was his next calling, where he served as a chaplain. Along his journey, he founded a total of four schools, although Lycoming College is the jewel that shines brightest in his educational crown.
Fast forward to 1921, and enter John W. Long, a man with a vision. As the ninth president of the school, Long, who also founded the Wesley Foundation at Pennsylvania State College (now known as Penn State University), steered the seminary into the future. Under his able guidance, Williamsport Dickinson Seminary transformed into Pennsylvania's first private junior college in 1929.
By 1947, Lycoming College stood tall as a four-year school. A year later, the institution embraced the Native American term 'Lycoming', attributed to a local stream, meaning "sandy stream", marking another chapter in its illustrious history. A significant move, it reflected the support and confidence of the board of trustees and local community towards the college's vision. A year later, in 1949, Lycoming added another feather in its cap, starting to confer baccalaureate degrees.
The college elected James E. Douthat as its 14th president in 1989, marking the beginning of an era of advancement. Under his leadership, Lycoming College witnessed a surge of 27 percent in its enrolment, while the college's financial assets rose from a modest $17 million to an impressive $185 million. Douthat’s leadership further bolstered the college’s development, with the establishment of a new faculty governance structure, improved facilities and a revised curriculum that catered to changing global demands.
In 2013, Kent C. Trachte took the reins as Lycoming's 15th president. Carrying forth his predecessor's mission, Trachte successfully oversaw many projects. He shepherded the completion of the Lynn Science Center, and paved the way for the construction of the Krapf Gateway Center. He also initiated the construction of a state-of-the-art music practice building that is all set to open its doors in 2022.
An ardent advocate of inclusivity, Trachte has consistently worked to enhance diversity at Lycoming. He continues to guide the college through another period of long-range planning, leading an initiative to revitalize the Old Town section of Williamsport and making Lycoming College a welcoming place for students of all backgrounds. His efforts have contributed significantly to Lycoming standing as an institution that encourages individuality, nurtures talent, and helps every student unleash their potential.
