Just imagine, folks, it's July 1825, and a group of enthusiasts hopes to create a utopian society. They begin farming on a tracing of land destined to be the home of Antioch College. They shared a common vision nurtured by their Owenite beliefs, but the community collapsed within a year. Yet their dream lived on and gave rise to the development of a more resilient and influential institution.
Fast-forward to October 5, 1850. The General Convention of the Christian Church takes a giant leap, resolving to advance their denomination by establishing a college. Driven by their ambition and determination, they pledge $100,000 (quite a vast sum in those days) for their dream institution's creation. Their vision was clear - the college would offer equal privileges to both male and female students.
Despite the Christian Connection's zealous efforts towards fundraising, they fell short, failing to cover the cost of the original buildings. And yet, hope fluttered. With the Unitarian Church lending equal financial support and nearly the same number of being students, the dream of Antioch College slowly started to solidify.
Now, if you don't know who Horace Mann is, then you're in for a surprise. Mann was Antioch's first president, governing the college from 1853 until his demise in 1859. The college’s mission during its early years was maintaining high academic standards and instilling a deep sense of morale in its students. A rich curriculum ranging from Latin and Greek to mathematics and science was on the menu, and boy did the students eat it up.
A standout personality, Rebecca Pennell, deserves special mentioning. The pioneering woman was one of the first in American history to sit on the professorial chair with pay equal to her male counterparts. Her residence, now known as Pennell House, still stands as an integral part of the college campus.
Let's jump to the year 1859, which brought a significant shift – Mann drew his last breath, leaving behind a legacy carried forward by successors. The next few years saw the college grapple with financial constraints resulting in it being shuttered until the end of the Civil War.
Once the college reopened in 1865, it seemed as though its financial health had improved, but it suffered another setback during the Long Depression in 1873. It took until 1882 for the endowment to recover, signaling another new beginning for the institution.
Now, let's play ball! In 1869, Antioch kindled its sports spirit, hosting a preseason game against Cincinnati Red Stockings, who went on to become the first professional baseball team. Our dear college might not have been part of the first professional game, but it does hold the claim to hosting the first-ever rainout in professional baseball history. A small but fun historic fact, don't you think?
Moving into the early 20th century, Antioch experienced notable growth under the stewardship of President Simeon D. Fess. It weathered multiple challenges, including World War I and the Spanish flu epidemic, and even rebuffed a takeover attempt by the YMCA in 1919.
By the 1960s and '70s, the name Antioch became synonymous with activism and progressive political thought. Notable alumni, such as Eleanor Holmes Norton, would later recall how the high-intensity environment of the campus sparked their passion for defending justice.
However, in the 21st century, Antioch fell on hard times again and had to face closure in 2008. But true to its tradition, the spirit of rebirth and reinvention echoed within its corridors, leading to a determined fundraising effort by the alumni and faculty.
After a roller-coaster journey filled with struggles and achievements, Antioch College today stands not only as a symbol of academic resilience but also as a testament to human endurance in the quest for education and enlightenment.
