History Selkirk College

Back in the twinkling year of 1966, nestled amid the jaw-dropping beauty of British Columbia, Canada, a seed of an idea bloomed - Selkirk College! This wasn't an everyday college, oh no! It came about as a genuine eureka moment by a group of spirited and driven folks who reckoned education should be more than rote learning, more than boring lectures – and boy did they make it happen!

Leading this gang of unconventional standouts was Dr. Jim Poole. Ever thought of a college president as someone swaying the academic baton with gumption and verve? Let's say he stirred things up a bit. A dash of this, a dollop of that, and Dr. Poole took Selkirk College from its cradle to a place students flocked to - from the resplendent sun-kissed shores of the Pacific, and believe it or not, even across seven seas!

Now, the Selkirk journey wasn't all easy-peasy. Like any good story, it had its bumps and surprise twists. In the tumultuous years of '69 to '72, the college faced the tremors of financial crises. But, the Selkirk spirit pirouetted like a ballet dancer, embracing the tough times as opportunities. The year 1975 saw an unforeseen bend in the road; the formation of the Selkirk College Faculty Association. Wait, what? A faculty association? Yup, you heard it right!

And just when you thought the drama might end (spoiler: it doesn't), the 80s brought a fresh whirlwind. The college was at risk of losing its autonomy. But, Selkirk held its ground. Hah! It thought, ”You guys think you can push me around?” And like a stubborn cowboy, it held tight, reinforcing its independence in 1988. Phew, crisis averted!

Fast forward to 2005, and the college welcomed Dr. Marilyn Luscombe, the first woman president, sweeping the traditional norms out of the window. She ushered in an era of innovation, making every effort to meet the diverse needs of the students - from installing state-of-the-art tech labs to pushing for global collaborations.

Speaking of global, here's the fun part for our Indian amigos! Selkirk knows the world is a big family, and since 2010, it has opened its doors to international students. With over 1000 students from 37 countries, Selkirk now hums with a rich, vibrant international tone, inviting folks to learn, grow and – who knows - maybe change the world!

And there you have it, the tale of Selkirk College, born of dreams, traversed through twists and turns, standing today as a global beacon of learning. The journey of Selkirk College might be unique, but it reminds us of the timeless truth - when the going gets tough, the tough get going. And trust me, there's no stopping this whirling educational dervish! Selkirk College, firmly paced in its roots, welcoming the world, and ever ready to surprise – what’s not to love? Tie your shoelaces and be a part of this thrilling journey. Hop on!
