History University of Moncton

Embracing waves of educational passion and aspiration in 1864, a handful of devoted Christian Brothers took it upon themselves to furnish a better future for the budding minds in New Brunswick. Back then, there was a thought, a dream - we wanted to establish a higher education institution, not knowing that it would evolve into the illustrious University of Moncton we admire today.

Digging into the grassroot level of Moncton's academic inception, Saint Joseph's College was the rock bed. Now, what made Saint Joseph's unique, you ask? Well, in the era when education was all about English, this college stood firm with its convictions, promoting French language education. Such a straight bat, right!

Back in the day, education wasn't like your daily cup of chai. A lot of changes unfolded, and in 1963, things really heated up. Merging bits and pieces of Bathurst, Edmundston, and Moncton's higher educational institutes, the University of Moncton was born out in full swing. Our Alma mater turned over a new leaf, generating its first gust of academic excellence.

The next few years dashed by in a flash, enrolling students faster than mum fills up the Diwali snack plate. By 1968, we were a bustling campus of over 1600 students. Mirroring the passion of the Indian community that it houses today, Moncton University, too, was being driven by tireless determination. With students hailing from diverse cultural backgrounds, the multicultural fabric of university life began to weave itself.

Cruising into the '70s, while ABBA was busy giving us one chartbuster after another, Moncton was busy charting its own academic track. An endearing powerhouse of knowledge, this decade was all about expansion and setting the bar high. The establishment of faculties covering health science, economic science, and political science – it was a science bonanza! And let's not forget the zing added by the School of Social work.

After hitting a home run in the seventies, Moncton's prowess didn't show signs of stopping. In the nineties, we truly rose to the occasion, much like a perfectly baked naan. This period marked the establishment of the Engineering faculty, and a professional-grade Observatory to make every astronomy geek swoon.

While the university continued its unwavering focus on quality education, the millennial decade on-set saw it taking a leap towards digital savvy learning methods. And then came 2004, with all its bells and whistles, when Moncton was officially proclaimed a research university.

In a nutshell, the University of Moncton punched above its weight, going from a higher ed starlet to a fully-fledged, globally acclaimed, French-language University. It's been a fascinating journey, dotted with some hiccups and many victories. Amidst the hustle-bustle of academic commitments, there's a real charm in tracing back the university's roots. After all, home is not just about the four walls. It's also about the story you weave within those walls. So, here's to the incredible journey that made us, "us".

And yeah, did you know, studying in French in North America? C'est la vie! Yes, my friend, that's the life at the University of Moncton – unique, enriching and oh so challenging!
