History University of King's College

Welcome to a fascinating odyssey through time, which goes way back to the 1754 – the birth year of King's College in New York City. Propelled by a royal charter from King George II, this institute rose to become New York State's eldest higher education institution and ranked fifth oldest across the United States. The turbulent times of the American Revolutionary War in 1776, though, saw the university's academic pursuits go on an eight-year hiatus, during which both American and British forces commandeered its facilities for military uses.

Eventually, when power shifted back to the Patriots, it set the scene for a dramatic episode. Bishop Charles Inglis, the rector of Trinity Church, commanded a host of Loyalists to Windsor, Nova Scotia. By 1788, these resolute Anglican loyalists had established the King's Collegiate School in Windsor, dedicating it to King George III. A year later, the narrative turned a page with the emergence of the University of King's College.

The selection of Windsor as the college's home was far from random. This lush semi-rural haven held a rich historical tapestry—it was the Mi'kmaq's home for more than 10,000 years before French colonists came and renamed it as part of the colony of Acadia.

Interestingly, the underlying reasons for the establishment of King's College were layered. One attribute was to guard against the influence of American Republicanism. Simultaneously, the founders sought to bolster British English as the dominant language in the colony.

The university's architectural blueprints were modeled after traditional English universities, characterized by residential and tutorial systems with church ties. Its foundational years carried an exclusivity of sorts—it accepted only white, British males who adhered to the values espoused in the 39 Articles of the Anglican Church.

A gripping detour takes us to 1920 when a cataclysmic fire consumed much of the university’s premises. Legend has it that an innocent act as simple as students playing with matches sparked this disaster. When Carnegie Foundation extended a conditional grant in 1922 to rebuild King's College, their condition was for the institute to shift to Halifax and collaborate with Dalhousie University.

The partnership between the two institutions facilitated students at King's to study at Dalhousie, while Dalhousie students could also gain exposure at King's, save for divinity. In the face of these exciting changes, King's was rechristened as the "University of King's College".

Flash forward to the present day. The University of King's College entertains a student population well over 1,000, marking substantial growth from its past. Despite its transformation into a nationally acclaimed university, King's remains deeply rooted in its maritime heritage. It continues to gain reputation for its teaching quality and unique academic culture, earning laudatory comparisons to top Canadian research universities. In today's world, if you're yearning for an eclectic blend of rigorous academic expectations with a co-operative academic culture, King's is the place to be!
