History First Nations University of Canada

Let's embark on a thrilling journey back in time to the year 1976. It's the foundational moment, where the story of the First Nations University of Canada (FNUniv) sewed its first seeds. Originating from the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College (SIFC), an institution of distinct intent and purpose, the goal was always clear and noble - to cater to the academic, cultural, and spiritual nourishment of the First Nations' students.

Because of its deep-rooted mission, it was meticulously affiliated with the University of Regina. The alliance was established through a significant agreement. The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations and the University of Regina formalized this pact in the blossoming days of May 1976, marking a turning point in Canadian education history.

Many exciting summers passed before an exciting revelation echoed through the corridors of the institution in 2003, under the dedicated leadership of its president, Eber Hampton. The academic institution took on a new name that resonated more closely with its mission - the FNUniv.

But, just changing the name didn't satiate the journey! In 2003, the FNUniv's Regina campus opened its doors, with bells and whistles. You won't believe who inaugurated it - the Earl of Wessex himself. Imagine joining a university with such a royal opening!

Fast-forward to 2005, the journey gets even more captivating. Queen Elizabeth II, the Queen of Canada, selected the university as her maiden port of call. It was during the commemoration of the centennial celebrations of Saskatchewan and Alberta. To say that it was an honour for the students and faculty would indeed be an understatement!

The institution's history has another fascinating chapter added by the Star Blanket Cree Nation. Yes, they put forward a commendable plan to proclaim the university property as an Urban Indian reserve. This proposal was part of a significant Saskatchewan Treaty Land Entitlement Agreement. The agreement saw the collaboration between Star Blanket, the provincial, and federal governments.

Believe this or not, the band members of the Star Blanket Nation were so inspired that they unanimously endorsed this impactful plan. How? With a ground-shaking referendum conducted in 2008. Every single person voted in favour - a powerfully unified statement of support and belief in the university and its philosophy.

In this enthralling journey, each chapter offers a unique insight into the university. It's not just about the academic rigour or prestigious affiliations; it's about the spirit that guides the institution - its commitment to providing much-needed academic, cultural, and spiritual support to the First Nations' students. The FNUniv is indeed, a beacon leading and inspiring the next generation of global learners.
