Here goes something you'll love to know. Way back in 1935, we find the genesis of Horizon College & Seminary. That's right folks, it's not some flashy, just out of the box institution, rather it has been enlightening minds for the good part of a century!
Now brace yourselves up for an amusing little tidbit. The story starts on the cold Christmas day of 1935. Imagine a group of seven passionate individuals, huddled together in a Prairie cottage, surrounded by endless stretches of snow. They must have been freezing but dear reader but for their passion, to enlighten minds, to feed curiosity.
Right they had! The gears of destiny turned and boom! In 1947, their vision culminated in the establishment of the school in Saskatoon. A modest beginning, you might say, but many a great deeds have sprouted from humble beginnings, isn't it?
Get this one bit though - the college was initially named Bethel Bible Institute, an unfamiliar name, eh? Humble beginnings indeed but the college wasn't one to stay confined within. Its voice and influence grew rapidly with a mission to transform young hearts and minds. So, in an act of re-branding in 1970, it took the bold, new moniker - Central Pentecostal College. It had begun to flex its muscles!
So, you think that was a smooth sailing? Guess again! The 90s were greeted by economic troubles. A bit of a downer for our college. Times were tough, but our folks were tougher. It was during these times of turmoil that a small group of community-minded fellas banded together, pooling resources and efforts to bring the institution back from the brink. Talk about the power of unity!
Miracle happened! By the end of the millennium in 2000, a more resilient and renovated college emerged, rising like a phoenix from its own ashes. And with this rejuvenation, it also welcomed a new name – Horizon College and Seminary, representing a bright new start.
Learning and adapting were two mottos the college never seemed to forget. Come 2007, it became the first Pentecostal institution in Canada to offer a Master of Arts in pastoral leadership degree. No kidding, the first in the whole of big Canada! Guess who needs to brush up on geography now!
Here's a funny thing though, the college gradually shifted its focus from mostly theology towards Leadership, and even Indigenous studies. Quite a transformation eh, a testimony to its commitment to diversity and inclusivity.
