Once upon a time, way back in 1862, when Abraham Lincoln was busy shaping the United States, a bunch of forward-thinking folks in Wisconsin decided to take a stab at making education accessible to everyone, they started the Sheboygan Academy, which is none other than our beloved Lakeland College.
Can you imagine, back then, going to college was a real adventure? Just like you, dear students, these American pioneers carried a suitcase filled with dreams and hopes, walking on unknown trails, eager to shape their destiny. Our college was no different, it opened its doors with dreams blazing and an appetite for knowledge, ready to make a mark in American history.
In 1863, with the leadership of the well-known Reverend H. A. Bonebrake, the tattooed Methodist minister who had a wild fondness for education, the Sheboygan Academy was baptized as Mission House College, a symbolic name that carries our mission to equip the young minds for the journey forth.
But the journey wasn't exactly a piece of cake! During 1937, our college had a close shave with bankruptcy, leaving it gasping for air. But, lo and behold, the brave hearts didn’t let them sink. They rolled up their sleeves, buckled up and toiled day and night to turn the tide around.
A big shout out to that dark horse, William A. Krueger, who took the reins in 1956 and rained magic on the barren land. He not only brought in fresh air of innovation but also expanded the campus grounds which now boast state-of-the-art facilities tailored for global students.
1963 was an ace year for us, changing our face from a small-time institute to a powerhouse of education by extending our courses to include the Liberal Arts and Science programs. A round of applause for our visionary president Dr. Arthur Krueger, who gave wings to our dreams in that landmark year.
In 1978, we shook hands with Japan, opening an opportunity to embrace their education and culture. This was our "Namaste" moment when we opened up to international exchanges and welcomed diversity into our family. Jiyo! Isn't that cool?
Great news knocked our door in 1991 when we received a royal stamp of approval to introduce graduate programs. This made us the first Wisconsin college to get the green signal for M.B.A. Now, that's something we can puff our chests out with pride, ain't it?
