Amid the serene backdrop of Lake Shore Boulevard and the bustling Dixie Road stands Canada Christian College, a symbol of faith and education. It sprouted in September 1967 from the seeds sown by a trio of men with a vision - Elmer McVety, his Canadian Evangelist comrade, John Wesley White, and his brother Hugh White. McVety, often seen as the dynamo behind this endeavor, was removed amidst a controversy, but he remained the backbone of the Association for Education and Evangelism he had established in 1963. This association later morphed into what we know today as the Evangelical Association.
In the college's early days, anticipate to hobnob with just about a hundred fellow students, a far cry from today's large student bodies. Though its foundation was in Ontario, its degree-granting abilities came from Manitoba. A sea-change occurred in 1974 when the association introduced a theological branch of study under the banner - Canada Christian College. Subsequently, arts programs continued their run at Richmond College's campus beautifully nestled at Leslie Street and Steeles Avenue.
However, the winds blew a different tune for Richmond College in 1981. It closed and handed its student records to Trinity Western University in far-off Langley, British Columbia. Tracing Canada Christian College's course, it may seem the college had a brush with trouble. In 1982, it lost the right to grant degrees following allegations that its BA and MA degrees could mislead students. The college had grown to serve 300 students by then.
Despite these legal battles, the institution forged ahead. By the end of the 1980s, Canada Christian College had loaned the services of Christian International University in Phoenix, Arizona, for creating most of their courses. However, this too came under fire, and the programs were seen as "academically substandard" in the state of Texas.
But life had a different plan for its founder, Elmer McVety. Following his demise in 1993, his son, Charles McVety, took the helm. Despite losing its degree-granting authority in Ontario, Canada Christian College sailed forward, relying on its Manitoba letters patent to grant theological degrees.
But the storm hadn’t passed yet. In 1991, Richard Allen, the Minister of Colleges and Universities, pointed out that the college's degree granting contradicted the Degree Granting Act of 1983. The tides turned again in 1998 with an order to shut down the college. The following year, however, saw the college's luck turning around with the introduction of Bill PR-4, granting degree-granting authority to the college in Ontario.
Fast forward to 2020, the college found itself at the heart of a new bill proposing it be given the status of a university with the power to award Bachelor's degrees in Arts and Science. This rekindled the flames of controversy as Kathleen Wynne, the former Premier of Ontario, openly criticized the proposal. At odds with the proposal were also members of the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations. Ford, the man attributed with introducing the bill, was accused of favoritism and striking shady deals.
But undeterred, McVety, spoke up against these allegations, maintaining that the college welcomed everyone, including the LGBTQ community, with open arms. Despite the criticism and allegations, the college remained unfazed. It was their belief that the proposal was to correct a "systemic problem" that plagued such institutions. He argued against the mindless name-calling damaging the reputation of his institution and its many students.
Relying on the controversial bill, the college looked forward to creating new Bachelor of Arts and Science degrees. Despite this, the bill isn’t being proclaimed, pending a final decision from the PEQAB as of May 2021. PEQAB rejected the college’s request for a change in status and granting of academic degrees.
Charles McVety, not one to back down, blamed the political corruption and the misleading portrayal of the college for this outcome. It’s students, he said, deserved better. This disappointment has led them to pursue a lawsuit against PEQAB. Despite the many chapters of their chequered journey, Canada Christian College still stands, a beacon of light for its faithful students. As they look to the future, they maintain their spirit of faith and optimism; after all, every dawn brings a new beginning.
