History University of Leicester

The story of the University of Leicester is a saga filled with hard work, fortitude and a steady pursuit of excellence in education. Here's an engaging account of this illustrious University's history.

Let’s travel back to when it all started. Imagine being part of the Leicester Literary and Philosophical Society in the early days, before the term "scientific" had its present meaning. With the accomplishments of Owens College in Manchester and the birth of the University of Birmingham and Nottingham University College, the society believed it was time Leicester had its own university college. However, the path to establishing that dream was filled with challenges. For instance, during the 19th and 20th centuries, university colleges could not grant degrees but were instead associated with universities possessing degree-giving powers.

Fast forward to the 20th century, where Revered James Went, the headmaster of the Wyggeston Boys' School, and J. D. Paul, co-presidents of the Society, strongly advocated for a university college in Leicester. They faced many obstacles, and unfortunately, their calls for a university college went unanswered. It wasn't until 1912, when Dr Astley V. Clarke took over as the Society's president, was the idea revisited. Dr Clarke, a man born and raised in Leicester and a product of esteemed institutions such as the University of Cambridge and Guy's Hospital, sparked fresh debates about establishing a university college. But the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 put the talks on hold.

The fires of hope were rekindled after World War I, ignited by an editorial in the Leicester Daily Post that urged the creation of something more meaningful than war memorials to commemorate the war dead. With the end of the war, both the Daily Post and the Leicester Mail began fierce campaigns encouraging donations to establish the much-desired university college. These efforts were finally rewarded when Thomas Fielding Johnson, a wealthy businessman, bought 37 acres of land for the noble purpose of establishing the college.

With King George V giving his royal nod in 1919, it was time to shape the curriculum of the institution. While some focussed on training for Leicester's prime industries, others aimed for a broader educational ambit. The 1902 and 1918 education acts, which made education widely accessible, also emphasised the need for a college that could train the rising number of teachers. Despite various hurdles, Leicester stood firm on the idea of becoming a standalone college rather than merging with other institutions. In 1920, it appointed its first official – W. G. Gibbs who was a staunch supporter of the college.

The College opened its doors in October 1921, beginning with a first batch of 14 people, including the enrolment of its first few students. By 1927, after it had transitioned to University College, Leicester, students could sit for examinations and earn degrees from the University of London.

The formidable journey continued. PG Wodehouse's famous quote, "Success comes to those who steadfastly look for it."- aptly describes the path that led to the establishment of University College, Leicester in the late 1920s. The meritorious students attempted and succeeded in securing University of London degrees in 1927, which sent ripples of success stories in the academic circles. The University, in its relentless pursuit of academic brilliance, merged with Vaughan Working Men's College, a notable institution facilitating adult education since 1862, in 1929.

Fast track to 1957, the University College was awarded with its royal charter, rendering it the power to confer its degrees. This official recognition was followed by an event of monumental significance - the opening of the Percy Gee Student Union building by Queen Elizabeth II in 1958.

Moving onto the 21st century, in 2011, the university gained prominence as one of four sites selected for national high performance computing (HPC) facilities. This was buoyed by an unprecedented investment of £12.32 million. In 2012, it caught worldwide attention when a team from the University exhumed King Richard III's body.

The university's journey continues in the annals of history. From being established from scratch to becoming one of the top Universities, it is a perfect testament to the undying spirit of educational pursuit, showcasing that you can indeed turn your dreams into reality. Even today, it continues striving for excellence, living up to its motto "Ut Vitam Habeant – So that they may have life".
