Back in 1831, a proposal for a new university in Newcastle upon Tyne ignited a flame in Thomas Greenhow's heart. He dreamed of a haven of learning and knowledge, and passionately shared this dream at a lecture to the Literary and Philosophical Society. The following year, this idea began to take root. A group of local medical professionals, including physicians George Fife, Samuel Knott and surgeons John Fife, Alexander Fraser, and Henry Glassford Potter, decided to invite more minds to partake in their wealth of knowledge. They began offering medical lectures in Bell's Court, supplementing the apprenticeship system. Duncan McAllum, another surgery maestro, was rumored to have joined this team, but did not appear in the roster.
What was originally just a dream grew into an adventure with the start of the first session on October 1, 1832. Only a handful, eight or nine eager young minds, were present at the start. Among them was John Snow, then an apprentice to a local surgeon-apothecary. The first lecture was delivered by John Fife. In just two short years, the population of passionate learners had grown that the lectures and practical demonstrations had to be moved to the Hall of the Company of Barber Surgeons.
October 1 proved to be a significant date for this young institution. On this day in 1834, a School of Medicine and Surgery was formed, a firm foundation for further growth. But as the institution expanded, differences and disputes among the faculty arose. On June 25, 1851, the school formally dissolved, and the staff splintered into two rival institutions. One faction formed the Newcastle College of Medicine, while the other established themselves as Newcastle upon Tyne College of Medicine and Practical Science. Both institutions were fiercely competitive, with their lecture courses vying for the top spot.
Recognizing the Newcastle College of Medicine, the Society of Apothecaries endorsed it in July 1851, followed by an approval by the Royal College of Surgeons of England in October the same year. By the following January, the University of London had also approved the college. This paved the way for students to submit London medical degree examinations. This growth did not stop there. Later in 1852, the college formally connected with the University of Durham. It was then christened the "Newcastle-upon-Tyne College of Medicine in connection with the University of Durham". This institution proceeded to set a precedent in the UK. It awarded its first 'Licence in Medicine' (LicMed) under the auspices of the University of Durham in 1856, becoming the first medical examining body in the country to institute practical examinations along with written and viva voce examinations.
The two rival colleges finally merged in 1857, coming together to create an even stronger institution that started its first session on October 3 of that year. A new degree of Master of Surgery was introduced in 1861, fostering a platform for double qualification. It also paved the way for Bachelor of Medicine and Doctor of Medicine degrees. By 1870, the college had been brought into closer association with the University of Durham. The Reader in Medicine became the Professor of Medicine, and the college gained a representative on the university's senate. However, this new linkage created a hurdle for students who wished to receive higher degrees. They had to spend a period of residence in Durham before they could receive the said degrees.
Efforts to incorporate the teaching of sciences in the city reached fruition with the establishment of the College of Physical Science in 1871. The college was designed to cater to the growing demands of the mining industry, and it taught subjects like mathematics, physics, geology, and chemistry. Renamed as Armstrong College in 1904 in honor of William George Armstrong, both these institutions became part of the University of Durham. The university became a federal institution under the Durham University Act 1908. This act bifurcated the university into two branches, one in Durham and another in Newcastle.
Rapid expansion of the medical and science colleges exceeded the growth of their Durham counterparts throughout the early 20th century. This growth spurt created friction between the two branches of the university. In response to this friction, a Royal Commission in 1934 recommended the merger of the two colleges to form King's College, Durham. The recommendation materialized into reality with the Durham University Act 1937.
However, further growth of both divisions led to tensions within the structure. The institution proved too large to manage as a single entity. It resulted in the medical and science college splitting from its Durham counterpart on August 1, 1963, under the Universities of Durham and Newcastle upon Tyne Act 1963.
