History University of East Anglia

Bring yourself back to the 19th century, laying the foundations in your imagination for a university in the city of Norwich. For decades, dreams and plans unhurriedly unfolded on the drawing boards. However, life wasn't always lenient, and so it took till 1960 for the deserving city to witness the establishment of the University of East Anglia, offering courses in the realm of biological sciences and English studies.

The early days saw the university teaching under the makeshift umbrella of the "University Village". Visualize the sight of Chairman of the University Grants Committee, Keith Murray, inaugurating this makeshift village in 1963. An assembly of 1,200 students unfolded under the temporary roof, one that was carnivalesque with the vice-chancellor and administration finding its refuge in the Earlham Hall nearby.

1961—it was the year when the first vice-chancellor, Frank Thistlethwaite, tapped onto the imagination of architect Denys Lasdun. Lasdun, a flag bearer of the "New Brutalist" architectural trend, was then building Fitzwilliam College. Tasked with the mammoth assignment, Lasdun chose his canvas to be on the western edge of the city. The artist in him perceived potential in the land that was occupied by a golf course then.

His creativity in architecture led to the construction of the "teaching wall". It was a single block that was 460 metres long, accommodating both teaching and research functions. Fast forward to 1968, Bernard Feilden, who was the successor of Lasdun, elevated the landscape of the university, adding groups of terraced residences that later became famous as "Ziggurats".

Take note of the landmark years as we journey further. In 1964, a riveting drama production featured "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller; in 1965, Benjamin Britten was honoured as the music adviser for UEA, and a royal visit from Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret marked 1968.

The vibrant 70s had the campus buzz with activity. Acclaimed duo Malcolm Bradbury and Angus Wilson introduced the first creative writing course in the UK within the School of Literature, Drama, and Creative Writing. In 1972, an accolade in the form of Civic Trust Award was bestowed upon the university. 1973 witnessed the commencement of work on the university's lake, UEA broad.

Rewind to the year 2000. UEA's environmental research efforts didn't go unnoticed, and its name echoed loud when they became the chosen site for the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research. Move forward to 2003—it was the year when the School of Pharmacy came into existence, marking yet another milestone.

Move closer now to 2014. The university manifested its environmental responsibility by opening the most eco-friendly building, Crome Court. A year later, it was time to rock n roll with Radio 1's Big Weekend being celebrated at UEA. Through all these years, UEA stood tall and faced several challenges, even offering support to the NHS staff by providing its empty student accommodation during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Let's fast forward to 2023. Financial troubles darkened the horizon; the university suffered a loss of £74m in the financial year ending 31 July 2022. It saw Vice-Chancellor David Richardson bidding farewell to his position at UEA and the induction of Professor David Maguire as the new Vice-Chancellor.

Despite the hardships, the spirit of UEA remained undeterred. It continued the journey of empowering students and stood the test of time. On that note, let's keep our eyes on its unfoldments and achievements as it carves a glorious history for itself. Remember, despite the trials and tribulations, this journey is a testament to resilience, growth, and the spirit of excellence in the face of adversity. University of East Anglia—meandering through the labyrinth of time, yet standing tall.
