However, life wasn't always lenient, and so it took till 1960 for the deserving city to witness the establishment of the University of East Anglia, offering courses in the realm of biological sciences and English studies.
The early days saw the university teaching under the makeshift umbrella of the "University Village". Visualize the sight of Chairman of the University Grants Committee, Keith Murray, inaugurating this makeshift village in 1963. An assembly of 1,200 students unfolded under the temporary roof, one that was carnivalesque with the vice-chancellor and administration finding its refuge in the Earlham Hall nearby.
