Tales oft tell of a dawn in 1843 when our beloved Nottingham Trent University was just a twinkle in the eye of some warm-hearted scholars. Yessiree! British industrial development was galloping faster than a stallion fleeing a tornado and our ambitious squad realized that training for artisans and designers was need of the day. So in pursuit of knowledge and industrial harmony, the Nottingham Government School of Design, the forefather of our university, was born, and the seed of an academic revolution was planted right in the heart of England.
Our founders' motto "Shaping Futures" found the way, and before we knew it, the school's first director, a fellow by the name of Duncan, took the helm. Time and tide waited for none and with Mr. Duncan’s dynamic leadership, we gasped in surprise as the little school of design navigated the high seas of academia. We had one foot on the ladder and we weren’t letting go!
Fast forward to the swinging sixties, it was time to ditch our old school, um, literally! So, we did a bit of re-invention; they said rock n' roll changed the world, well to us, becoming a polytechnic did just that! They started to call us Nottingham Regional College of Technology, not as catchy, but hey it’s what’s inside that counts.
Our reputation as a perceptive place of learning began to echo in the corridors, but we still had some tricks up our sleeve. Then in 1970, in the true spirit of the 70s, we did the unexpected. From being a hub of technology, we sprouted wings and spread out to accommodate even disciplines like business, social sciences, journalism, and humanities; boy didn't that make us alive and kicking!
