Ruskin College

Drawing inspiration from the celebrated poet, artist, critic, and art theorist, John Ruskin, its namesake, Ruskin College thrives at the pulsating heart of Oxford - the globally recognized hub of academia. Historically recognized as a testament to England's affinity for labor education, the college came forth as an initiative to aid the working-class population who were barred from the conventional university-route academic experience. Chronicling it's present, Ruskin College unearths numerous educational possibilities for adults, irrespective of whether they possess lower qualifications or none at all. Segmented into three distinctive levels, the learning process offered here is designed to be inclusive and adapted to the circumstances of the individual. Learners who are unemployed at the time of enrollment can partake in the level one and two courses without paying a penny, while a nominal fee is charged for the third level. There is also an age and knowledge-based grouping of students, optimizing the efficiency of the learning curve.

From a student perspective, the educational experience at Ruskin College is liberating and crafted to suit one's unique academic and career inclinations. Up against the clock? Their expedited, short-term courses spanning two to three months let you quickly acquire professional skills. Even once you've tossed up your graduation caps, the connections fostered here continue to enrich your journey. An invitation to the Ruskin Fellowship Club, a prominent alumni network, awaits every graduating student, helping you stay linked with your college tribe whilst also aiding your professional endeavors. The club operates with a clear leadership hierarchy, accountability, as well as membership obligations - reflecting the very ethos of mutually beneficial camaraderie that Ruskin College prides itself on.

History Ruskin College

Picture it - the year is 1899, the city is Oxford, and an ambitious new educational institution, Ruskin Hall, now known as Ruskin College, is making its mark. This wasn't just any college; this institution was created as a lighthouse of learning for the working-class who were traditionally denied access to educational enlightenment.

Ruskin College was a brainchild of three young American scholars - Charles A. Beard, James Alfred Dale, and Walter Vrooman - who saw it necessary to bring education to the doorstep of the ordinary man. They purposely set their institution in Oxford, a city they recognized as a symbol of educational privilege that many could only dream of. The seed money for the college came from an unlikely source - Vrooman's then-wife, Amne Grafflin, who made it possible for this beacon of aspiration to shine.

Fast-forward to the inception of Ruskin. This establishment was intended to be more than just a school; it stood as the means for the "working-class reformers" to educate themselves at "nominal cost". Imagine this, you could opt for full accommodations and pay just 12s 6d (£0.625) every week or choose to learn via correspondence for just 1 shilling (£0.05) a week, excluding a 1 shilling entrance fee. They offered courses like political economy, sociology, history of the labour movement, fundamentals of politics, English literature, psychology, and more.

Ruskin’s administrative power lay with the General Council, which included elected representatives from the Trades Union Congress’s Parliamentary Committee and the Cooperative Union's Central Board. Then came 1901, when supporters of the school established the Ruskin Hall Educational League, an auxiliary organization that enhanced the institution's activities through conferences and public lectures.

Stuff of legend occurred during the First World War; the college offered a safe haven to approximately 200 Belgian refugees who sought shelter in Oxford. Ruskin College became a global symbol of workers' education, inspiring other labour colleges worldwide. The legendary Mahatma Gandhi even paid a visit during his quick stay in Oxford in 1931, driven by his admiration for John Ruskin's writings on workers' education.

In a surprising plot twist, in 1908, a group of Ruskin students, unsatisfied with what they perceived as an 'establishment-friendly' education policy, formed the Plebs' League. The school principal, Dennis Hird, was an unexpected ally, but the students' revolt led to his dismissal and a subsequent student strike.

Jump to 1970, Ruskin College hosted the UK's first-ever National Women's Liberation Conference, attended by between 500 to 600 individuals. The conference was so influential that it was dubbed by The Guardian as one of the "biggest landmarks in British women's history". Ruskin students Arielle Aberson, Sally Alexander, and historian Sheila Rowbotham were the masterminds behind the historic event.

By 2012, a successful £17 million renovation of the college's Old Headington site was completed, and the headquarters were moved there from the original site in Walton Street. All buildings on the site were refurbished, gardens improved, and a new academic building, named the Callaghan Library in honor of James Callaghan - a former Labour Prime Minister, was unveiled.

Finally, we arrive at the present. 2021 marked a turning point for Ruskin College, making headlines as it agreed to merge with Activate Learning, saw the suspension of the College Principal, and was later acquired by the University of West London. Through all the ups and downs, Ruskin has remained a symbol of accessible education for ordinary people, serving as a testament to its founding vision. Today, this history-rich college stands tall, echoing nearly 125 years of educational legacy.
