A captivating tale of the University of Portsmouth takes us all the way back to 1 June 1870, or 1869 according to some, when it burst into existence as the Portsmouth and Gosport School of Science and Art. It was the late 19th century, and the seeds of this iconic institution were sowed in a multitude of buildings scattered across Old Portsmouth and Southsea. The Crown Sale Rooms in Pembroke, the main hub, welcomed eager minds, regardless of their gender.
The coastal location wasn't just picturesque; it was instrumental in shaping the school's identity. The curriculum offered knowledge that was practical and valuable. From practical geometry to artistic anatomy, architectural and mechanical drawing to night classes for local artisans, every step focused on strengthening its students to become qualified professionals. Many of them even ended up working in the city docks, including the esteemed Royal Navy at the Portsmouth Royal Dock Dockyard.
Fast-forward to 1894, educational reform shifted control of technical and manual education to local authorities, making way for the Portsmouth Municipal Technical Institute to be established by the Borough of Portsmouth, which took over the school's science and technology courses. The Portsmouth and Gosport School of Science and Art transformed, emerging as the College of Art.
