History University of Portsmouth

A captivating tale of the University of Portsmouth takes us all the way back to 1 June 1870, or 1869 according to some, when it burst into existence as the Portsmouth and Gosport School of Science and Art. It was the late 19th century, and the seeds of this iconic institution were sowed in a multitude of buildings scattered across Old Portsmouth and Southsea. The Crown Sale Rooms in Pembroke, the main hub, welcomed eager minds, regardless of their gender.

The coastal location wasn't just picturesque; it was instrumental in shaping the school's identity. The curriculum offered knowledge that was practical and valuable. From practical geometry to artistic anatomy, architectural and mechanical drawing to night classes for local artisans, every step focused on strengthening its students to become qualified professionals. Many of them even ended up working in the city docks, including the esteemed Royal Navy at the Portsmouth Royal Dock Dockyard.

Fast-forward to 1894, educational reform shifted control of technical and manual education to local authorities, making way for the Portsmouth Municipal Technical Institute to be established by the Borough of Portsmouth, which took over the school's science and technology courses. The Portsmouth and Gosport School of Science and Art transformed, emerging as the College of Art.

By 1903, the Education Act 1902 had kicked in, and construction began on a site behind the Portsmouth Guildhall. Completed in 1908 under the guidance of local Architect G.E. Smith, this stunning combination of Flemish and Renaissance architectural styles became the new home of the Portsmouth Municipal College, the Portsmouth Day Training College, the College of Art, and a public reference library. This beautiful Grade II listed building, now known as the Park Building, is still serving the University, its name paying homage to the nearby Victoria Park.

The year 1911 marked another notable milestone with the founding of the students' union for both male and female students. The same year bore witness to the creation of the first students’ magazine known as The Galleon and the formation of a women's basketball team.

Post World War II, the demand for engineering declined, nudging the college to expand its curriculum to incorporate arts and humanities. By 1953, the institution had evolved into the Portsmouth College of Technology, holding the reins of being the Regional College for Southern England.

The year 1969 was significant; the college metamorphosed into the Portsmouth Polytechnic, standing as one of the largest in the UK by the late ‘80s. On 7 July 1992, years of relentless striving culminated in the widely celebrated inauguration of the University of Portsmouth at a grand ceremony at the Portsmouth Guildhall. Now, as a new university, it held the power to validate its own degrees under the Further and Higher Education Act 1992.

Jump to May 4 2018, the University of Portsmouth beamed with pride as it graced the main shirt of Portsmouth F.C. as the sponsor for three continuous seasons, 2018-19 to 2020-21. The tale doesn't end here. In December 2022, the university went through a moment of self-reflection and learning when an employment tribunal shed light on an instance of racial discrimination against Kajal Sharma.

As you can see, the University of Portsmouth's history is a fascinating sequence of events, marked by resilience, transformation, and growth. It’s a legacy we carry forward, learning from the past, while chasing the horizons of innovation, inclusivity, and academic excellence.
