Imagine a time in 1836 when inclusivity in education was a rare concept. Against this backdrop, Alfred University emerges, not as an ordinary institution, but as a pioneer in co-education. Founded by one visionary Seventh Day Baptist called Bethuel C. Church, it was financial help from the Seventh Day Baptist Educational Society, especially from 'Female Educational Societies' that lit the beacon for this unique venture. By breaking societal norms, this school went on to offer education to African-American and Native American students within the first two decades of its existence. Surprising isn't it?
Fast forward a few years, Alfred Academy leaped forward a major milestone in its journey. In 1842, the New York State Board of Regents recognized it with a charter. It was entrusted to build future educators, and boy, did it take this responsibility seriously! With a vision to make a substantial contribution to global education, it welcomed three key educational fields into its sphere: classic, scientific, and one broad realm for women that amalgamated subjects from the classical and scientific arenas.
Jonathan Allen, an early teacher and later the second president, came around with a bolder ambition – transforming the academy into an accredited university! He sought a government licence for over two years, and finally perseverance bore fruit. In March 1857, we greeted Alfred University, owing its name to a charter from the New York State Legislature. Interestingly, the Department of Theology also found a place at Alfred University years later.
Did you know? Alfred University is the oldest co-educational college in the entire New York and New England regions, and the first institution in the United States to welcome women across all programs minus any segregation. Here's a shout-out to equality and empowerment!
But, the innovation did not stop there. The 20th century brought forth an exciting new dimension to Alfred University. In 1900, the New York State Legislature gave nod to set up a "State School of Clay-Working and Ceramics," keen to foster development of local industries and materials. How cool is that?
Today, this has evolved into the commendable New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, bifurcated into the School of Engineering and the School of Art and Design. The curriculum is quite intriguing, featuring the study of ceramics and glass throughout both the engineering and art programs. Although, it's vital to consider that the College of Ceramics is part of the State University of New York system. Alfred University, in its private capacity, also nurtures a College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and a College of Business.
Quite fascinatingly, the New York College of Agriculture came into being within Alfred University in 1908. Over the years, it gained autonomy and joined the State University of New York system in 1948. Although Alfred State College functions as a separate institution, it shares an annual "Hot Dog Day" with Alfred University in a capsule of camaraderie.
In essence, Alfred University is more than just an educational institution. It is a symbol of progress, inclusivity, and innovation. From guest lectures by acclaimed figures like Frederick Douglas, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Ghostface Killah to hosting then–First Lady Hillary Clinton in 2000, it has rightfully earned its ranking as Regional Universities North, #45 by U.S. News & World Report 2021. Furthermore, Alfred University's acceptance rate stands at 66%, with a middle 50% of admittees scoring between 940 and 1180 on SAT or 20 and 27 on ACT as of 2019. It's a progressive hub of learning, indeed!
So, are you ready to plunge into this immersive educational experience? Do you envision yourself as a part of a global, forward-thinking community? Remember, Alfred University, named after Alfred the Great, king of the Saxons, succeeded against the odds. With the right dedication, so can you!
