History University of Baltimore

Picture an old four-story rowhouse on St. Paul St., where the year is 1925. This is where our story begins, with the University of Baltimore (UBalt), initially conceived to open doors of learning for the city's hard-working individuals. A group of dedicated business professionals living in Baltimore founded UBalt, backed by a vision of equitable educational opportunities for all, regardless of their work schedule.

Let's jump to 1937, where the university suddenly became more than an evening learning hub for adults. The daylight now saw eager learners too, as day programs were introduced. Subsequently, our university took a transformational leap and evolved into a full-scale junior college.

Fast forward to 1966, an iconic year for UBalt as the construction of the Langsdale Library came to fruition. This addition wasn't the only change in the upcoming decades. In an impressive mergers' series in the early 1970s, UBalt amalgamated with Eastern College, Mount Vernon School of Law, and Baltimore College of Commerce, enhancing its curriculum and scope remarkably.

The presidency of Thomas Granville Pullen sure put UBalt on the academic map. As of 1971, the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools bestowed regional accreditation on the institution. Around the same time, the Langsdale Library further blossomed under Pullen's leadership.

Between 1975 to 2007, we saw UBalt taking a unique stride as an "upper division academic institution," offering only senior years of undergraduate courses along with post-graduate study programs. This is also the year when the ownership baton was passed to the state of Maryland.

Shifting to 1988, the state strategically fused UBalt with the newly-formed statewide university network called the University of Maryland System. As we now know it, the system was later renamed the University System of Maryland. Now, UBalt wasn't just a single institute anymore but a crucial part of an extensive academic network.

The Lower Division Initiative that commenced in 2005 crafted an innovative path for UBalt. Perhaps the university missed the energy of fresh faces on campus because, in 2005, the University System of Maryland's board of regents allowed UBalt to start accommodating freshmen and sophomores once again.

After some plan revisions, as of 15th February 2006, UBalt received the green light from the Maryland Higher Education Commission to recuperate its full four-year undergraduate status. This meant welcoming the first batch of freshmen in the fall of 2007. To amplify the excitement, an anonymous donor sweetened the deal by offering to pay the first year's tuition for this inaugural batch.

With its energised freshman program, UBalt also got a makeover in its branding. The institution changed its school colors and adopted a catchy new slogan, "Knowledge That Works." The curriculum was revamped to cater to modern-day fields like business, pre-law, technology, public affairs, and applied liberal arts.

Accelerating towards 2014, our beloved university built a 12-story law school building and additional on-campus residential facilities. This boost in infrastructure was not just limited to physical facilities, though. The talented Kurt L. Schmoke took over the reins as UBalt's eighth president, succeeding the venerable retired president Robert Bogomolny.

Jumping right to 2022, let's toast to the successful renovation of Langsdale Library, renamed Robert L. Bogomolny Library. Who's behind this architectural marvel? It's no other than the celebrated German architectural firm Behnisch Architekten, who also designed our handsome law school structure on the corner of Charles St. and Mount Royal Ave in 2013.

Interestingly, since 2005, the university's MBA program has been under the microscope of other institutions. They express concerns over supposed fund mismanagement, stemming from UBalt's traditionally white institution status. At the beginning of 2022, this critique is still a lively topic. Stay tuned for the next chapter of UBalt's evolving history, as this story is far from finished!
