History University of Mary Hardin

Did you know the roots of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (UMHB) go way back to before Texas became a U.S. state? It all began in 1845, with the original charter granted by the Republic of Texas when it was still independent. This marked the birth of Baylor University's female department, thus cementing UMHB's role as a pioneer in girls' education.

Set on a hillside at Independence in Washington County, the first round of classes kicked off in May 1846. Though held in a modest wooden structure, these classes saw a mix of 24 eager male and female students. Maintaining a coeducational system, however, didn't last too long. With a twist in 1851, separate establishments for girls and boys sprung up in the Independence campus, affirming a new era of gender-focused education.

Now, you must be wondering why the campus shifted? Fast-forward to 1886, the evolving demographics and a local railway relocation posed a challenge for students travelling to Independence. Seeking a safer, more accessible location, the ruling board uprooted both colleges. The women's branch landed in Belton and became Baylor Female College; simultaneously, the male division relocated to Waco, integrating with the coed Waco University to make Baylor University.

In an unprecedented move, the Belton campus introduced a first-of-its-kind work-study program for women in a college west of Mississippi River in 1893. Women could lessen their financial burdens by growing vegetables, rearing livestock, hand-making crafts, and making quality clothing items, Reducing expenses while gaining practical skills, isn't that interesting?

Adding another quirky chapter in its history, Baylor Female College, renamed Baylor College for Women in 1925, started welcoming a few male students, the so-called 'Campus Boys', from 1922. These boys helped maintain the grounds, performing chores considered inappropriate for the women, like shoveling coal and cleaning clogged drains. They lived on the second floor of a carpenter shop, nicknamed "The Shack".

As the years rolled, the college added more feathers to its cap. In 1926, it achieved accreditation status from the Southern Association of Colleges and Universities, a first for a Texas Baptist college. A wave of students flocked in, forcing the institution to embark on constructing new buildings. But a campus fire in 1929 and the blow of the Great Depression tipped the college to bankruptcy.

When nothing seemed to work, a ray of hope dawned. The generosity of Mary and John G. Hardin, private donors, saved the college from bankruptcy. The college, in gratitude, renamed itself to Mary Hardin-Baylor College in 1934. Fast-forward to 1968, the Scott and White College of Nursing merged with Mary Hardin–Baylor College, adding more diversity to its offering.

1971 marked the return of coeducation at Mary Hardin–Baylor College. The first male students graduated in August right before a graduate program was launched in 1978, marking it as a university with five colleges. The dedication and grit over the years had transformed Mary Hardin-Baylor College into the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, an institution that continues to inspire student education today.
