Once upon a time, in the city of Battle Creek, Michigan, a spark ignited that would later become a beacon of education -- Andrews University. Back in 1874, this budding institution was just a modest Seventh-day Adventist school known as Battle Creek College. By 1901, the winds of change were blowing and the whole school packed its entire existence into 16 boxcars adventuring towards its new home -- Berrien Springs, Michigan. The college's new identity blossomed there, now known as Emmanuel Missionary College, or EMC, the first school in the Seventh-day Adventist system to sport a biblical name.
However, the spirit of Battle Creek College stayed alive. In 1923, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg brought it back from the ashes. He amalgamated the Training School for Nurses, the School of Home Economics, and the School of Physical Education to form a new Battle Creek College. This reincarnation existed until 1938, left nesting memories and achievements in the annals of history.
Meanwhile, EMC continued to thrive and grow in Berrien Springs. Notably, the 1940s marked a milestone with the erection of the Nethery Hall, a symbol of an ambitious construction program. It is now the cornerstone for the College of Arts and Sciences. The 1930s also witnessed the establishment of a Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary. Initially housed on the campus of Pacific Union College in Napa Valley, it later migrated to Washington, D.C., nearing the denominational headquarters.
In the mid-20th century, a series of critical decisions steered the course of EMC's history. The year 1956 marked the union of Potomac University's graduate program and theological seminary with the school in Berrien Springs. This was a calculated move for training elementary and secondary teachers within the Adventist educational framework, rather than outsourcing it to non-Adventist institutions.
The school then metamorphosed into Potomac University, honoring the counsel of Ellen White to situate schools in rural locations for optimum development. The idea of pairing this university with Washington Missionary College, however, had to be abandoned due to excessive expense and logistics.
Something remarkable happened in 1958. EMC itself welcomed the transfer of Potomac University to its premises. The unanimous decision of the Autumn Council saw the advent of the college and the university on a common ground. EMC remained an independent entity, but just with a new constitution.
By 1959, H. L. Rudy, a notable figure in the SDA General Conference, sculpted a new relationship with EMC. This union ushered the introduction of the graduate programs and the seminary in 1960 resulting in the christening of the institute to "Andrews University."
The name, "Andrews University," holds exceptional significance. John Nevins Andrews, after whom it was named, was the first officially sponsored overseas missionary for the Seventh-day Adventist Church and a respected scholar. Thus, on April 5, 1960, "Adventist University" was replaced with "Andrews University".
Today, the seminary continues its journey as the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary. Andrews University has blossomed into an integrated entity of two colleges—the College of Arts & Sciences and the College of Technology, along with a School of Business Administration, School of Education, and a School of Architecture, Art & Design. A recent restructuring led to the inception of the School of Health Professions in 2012.
Their journey didn't stop there. In 2011, Griggs University joined forces with Andrews and evolved into the School of Distance Education. The partnership extended their educational reach beyond the local community, propelling it to national and international fame.
