The university's acclaimed scientific achievements and developments propel it even higher. Notable amongst these is the renowned National Center for Marine Renewable Energy, established on a federal mandate, responsible for revolutionizing energy production using ocean water and surf power. Then there's the Center for Research in Biomedical & Marine Biology, providing graduates a platform to showcase superior knowledge and stand out as industry leaders worldwide. Let's not forget FAU’s financial college, ranked within the top 100 globally - its uniqueness amplified through a state-of-the-art room-like simulator that accommodates up to 50 students and is facilitated by a 25-inch monitor ensemble. With one foot always in the evolution curve, FAU continues to equip its students with dynamic learning resources, including an abundant library-lab that houses a vast array of video lectures and business/economics-oriented records, apart from printed materials. These attributes have led the prestigious Carnegie Foundation to recognise FAU’s innovative scientific approach by honoring it with the "High Research Activity" accolade.

History Florida Atlantic University

Picture this: it's the hot summer day of July 15, 1961 in Boca Raton, Florida, where a decision made by the state legislature was about to leave a remarkable footprint in the annals of American educational history. A new university was born - The Florida Atlantic University (FAU), sprung up on the grounds of the historical Boca Raton Army Airfield, a 1940s-era army base preparing its citizens for a world at war. Did you know, during World War II, this was the only radar training facility for the Army Air Corps?

Now, let's rewind to the early days of World War II. The vast expanse where FAU exists today was formerly a territory seized from Japanese-American farmers who made their living in Yamato Colony. Its original purpose? To perform radar training, anti-submarine patrols along the coastline, and serving as a stop-over point for planes being ferried to Africa and Europe via South America. But, by 1947, the base was essentially deserted as radar training operations moved out of Florida to the Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi.

Fast-forward 17 years to September 14, 1964, when the FAU officially threw open its doors to an inaugural batch of eager students, adding up to a total of 867. Yes, you read that right! Their first degree? An honorary doctorate awarded to President Lyndon B. Johnson on October 25, 1964. At the start, there were 350 committed employees, of which more than a third were devoted faculty.

In an exciting step forward, student accommodation was first introduced on the campus in September 1965 with the construction of Algonquin Hall. All along, the FAU was originally intended to serve only upper-division and graduate-level students, complementing the state's community college system. However, it only marked the beginning of FAU’s journey of growth and expansion while catering to the educational needs of an exploding South Florida population.

In light of this expansion, FAU in 1971 extended its horizons beyond the Boca Raton campus, opening the Commercial Boulevard campus in Fort Lauderdale. Then came 1984, a year of notable significance when the FAU opened its heart and doors to lower-division undergraduate students. Only a year later, its third campus sprang up in downtown Fort Lauderdale on Las Olas Boulevard.

By 1997, recognizing the urgent need for quality higher education, the Florida Legislature led FAU to establish a campus in Dania Beach followed by another campus in Davie in western Broward County in 1990. FAU then also bought a land parcel of 50 acres at Port St. Lucie in 1994 to establish a Treasure Coast campus, their fifth one.

FAU’s quest for expansion continued into 1999 when it opened its Jupiter Campus, named for philanthropist John D. MacArthur, which brassily hosts the university's honors college. Turning another page in advancement, The Charles E. Schmidt College of Biomedical Science at FAU, in collaboration with the University of Miami's Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, set up a medical training program in 2004. However, after some budget hurdles in 2007, FAU established its independent College of Medicine in 2010.

2007 was an impactful year as the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution (HBOI) joined the FAU fold, forming the seventh campus. Thanks to the Florida Legislature's generous allocation of $44 million, FAU could bring HBOI into its university family.

Indeed, Florida Atlantic has come a long way from its inception in 1964. With over 30,000 students spanning seven campuses spread across 120 miles, it's a vibrant hub of learning. Its endowment now widening to over $240 million as of 2020. Seven dedicated presidents have left a profound imprint on FAU since its founding, with the current torchbearer, John W. Kelly, assuming office from March 1, 2014.

Thus, for students eyeing their future at FAU, know that you are becoming a part of an ever-evolving and inspiring story. The one that started with an abandoned army airfield is now a thriving institution that extends opportunities for all who seek enlightenment. And your part in that story? Well, that page is yet to be written! So, are you ready to be a part of our endless journey towards discovery and knowledge?
