Imagine traveling back in time to the year 1867, just after America's Civil War. In the state of Virginia, Alice Scott Chandler, a visionary woman, opens the doors of what was then known as the Home School for Girls in Bowling Green. But that was merely the beginning. The school wouldn't remain the same for long, as in 1883, a man named Edgar H. Rowe stepped into the picture and bought the school. This was the catalyst to the first significant change in the school's story.
Fast forward to the year 1900, Mr. Rowe decided to relocate the school to Buena Vista and aptly renamed it Southern Seminary. It found its home in the magnificent Buena Vista Hotel, which astonishingly was constructed only a decade prior. Originally built to accommodate a surge of land speculators intrigued by the town's iron ore deposits, the hotel stood tall amongst the muted boon of the iron industry.
Ever wondered about the most iconic building of the university? Well, the Buena Vista Hotel still stands today as the main hall of the Southern Virginia University. It's not just another old building, but a site that enjoys a rewarded place on the National Register of Historic Places, listed as the Southern Seminary Main Building.
Now, let's switch years to 1919. My padlock opens, and Robert Lee Durham, the former dean of Martha Washington College, purchases a shared interest in Southern Seminary. Durham was not an ordinary man, rather an educator, lawyer, engineer, author, and inventor all rolled into one. Under his proficient hand, the school's academic program saw an unprecedented improvement.
Durham didn't carry the torch alone. Accompanied by his daughter Margaret's husband, H. Russell Robey, who bought the remainder of Rowe's school shares and became its business manager and treasurer, the duo brought college-level courses to the curriculum. The first batch of students under this revised curriculum graduated as early as 1925.
Through the toughest years, Margaret Durham Robey, who inherited the presidential position from her father, witnessed something fascinating. The school that's now known as Southern Seminary and Junior College saw a significant infrastructure expansion, adding dedicated facilities for art, early childhood education, and home economics.
The year 1959 marked a significant change in leadership. The Robeys passed the institution's torch to a board of trustees, turning the school from proprietary to nonprofit status. Two years later, Southern Seminary Junior College, as it was now called, ceased to offer high school courses. The school had evolved into a standalone center of excellence, sending students off to illustrious careers or supporting those who wished to pursue studies from four-year colleges.
The next big shift took place in 1994 when SVC opened its doors to male students, and subsequently changed its name to Southern Virginia College. But the late 80s and early 90s brought with them challenging times, and at the edge of the 20th century, the college struggled with slips in enrolments and financial instability. Unfortunately, this ultimately led to a loss of regional accreditation in 1996.
In the spring of that year, Southern Virginia College's board of trustees transferred the school's assets and liabilities to a new board, with many members being a part of the LDS Church. The driving force behind this fundamental restructuring was Glade Knight, and under his strict guidance, the college was renamed Southern Virginia University in April 2001, and in 2003, it gained full accreditation from the American Academy for Liberal Education.
Fast forward to today, some significant changes have shaped Southern Virginia University. In 2017, the school colors were officially changed from green to crimson. In 2020, the university removed Durham's name from the main academic building in light of his racist views. This act stemmed from the George Floyd protests, and since then, the building has been temporarily named the Academic Center. And there, you have it: a sneak peek into the rich, vibrant, and continuously evolving history of Southern Virginia University!
