Our story begins in 1883, when the charismatic and visionary Willard J. Houghton, who dreams about education, says, "Why not open a seminary?". You might wonder, "A seminary?", well, you heard that right, folks. It's not what you're expecting, kapow! It's a school that focuses on teaching religious subjects, with a small group of learners dedicating their time to grasping the gravity of religious studies in the heart of New York's countryside. So, hello, a new educational venture styled Houghton Seminary is officially in action!
The seminary wasn't perched on an Ivy tower, mind you. It was where two rivers met, the Genesee and the Allegany, a divine confluence if you like. Willard J. Houghton envisioned it to be a space to blend spiritual and educational growth, much like our Indian gurukulas, teaching lads and lasses alike, mind-blowing, right?
Our head honcho's ideal, though noble, hit a rough patch. The seminary took one hard punch after another. The Great Depression struck in 1893, tumbleweeds rolled, and boom! Not even a decade later, in 1903, the school was smack in the middle of bankruptcy. But, as they say, every cloud has a silver lining, no?
As luck would have it, enter stage—a group of Free Methodist Church ministers who shared Houghton's vision, winked and said, "Guys, we've got an idea!" And thus, kicked off a new inning, as Houghton Seminary blossomed into Houghton College in 1923. Pareeksha bhavan (examination hall) turned into a Vishwavidyalaya (university), eh?
