Lesley University

Firmly established in 1909, Lesley University originated as a sanctuary for empowering women through early childhood education. In its infancy, it was nurtured by Friedrich Frebel's concept of kindergartens - structures of learning designed to offer succour and support to mothers. As it grew and flourished, Lesley broadened its academic landscape in 1913, including primary school teacher training in its curriculum. Then, in 1944, it unfurled its wings wider by morphing into a college, before securing the privilege to confer academic degrees ten years later in 1954. The crowning moment for Lesley arrived in 2001 when it attained the distinction of being a higher educational institution. Offering a vibrant mix of extracurricular activities, it focuses on two main areas: sports education and leadership development. The latter is given special emphasis as the university encourages its students to amplify their potential through hands-on roles like resident assistant positions on the Residence Life Community Advisory Board and Advisory Board. Sporting passion at Leslie takes center stage with its team participating in the NCAA Division III and collectively known as Lynx. In its relentless pursuit of inclusivity, Lesley has been running the Threshold program for three decades. This initiative is aimed at bolstering the professional prospects of individuals affected by cognitive and mental disabilities through tailored plans for each one.

Viewed from a student's perspective, Lesley University provides an enriching multidimensional experience. Not only students gain revered academic knowledge but are also thrust into the realm of leadership and are taught to navigate it efficiently. Practical exposure culled from serving on advisory boards equips students with real-world work ethic, decision making, and problem-solving skills. Sports, another forte of Lesley, presents an opportunity to showcase athletic prowess while simultaneously fostering team spirit, discipline, and resilience. Perhaps the most distinguished feature of Lesley is its Threshold program - a beacon of hope for those facing mental or cognitive challenges. It offers them a safe haven where they can cultivate and refine their professional skills, fortifying their future. Indistinctly, Lesley University is a confluence of diverse learning experiences and an institution that values each student's unique journey.

History Lesley University

Intriguingly, the story of Lesley University, a global icon of education, begins way back in 1909 at a young woman’s humble home in 29 Everett Street, Cambridge. That fearless woman was none other than Edith Lesley. Imagine this – she turned her home into the nucleus of an institution that was soon to consistently produce competent kindergarten teachers. It was a time when Friedrich Froebel’s revolutionary idea of kindergarten hadn’t received a worldwide audience.

Edith Lesley was not just a teacher, but an enthusiast who had experienced life in Panama and Maine, and studied in the tranquil environment of Freiburg, Germany before adopting Boston as her home. Her ambition sparked the creation of a unique kindergarten training school that was an embodiment of her beliefs. This is a place where individualism, gracious living, and the spirit of American democracy got together for a dance.

As the years went by, Lesley's family home couldn’t punch above its weight in terms of capacity. So, they built an addendum, now known as the Livingston Stebbins Hall. Fast forward a few years to 1913, and the Lesley School began widening their educational horizon to the skies of elementary teaching.

Lesley School reached a pivotal milestone in 1941, adopting a new structure under a board of trustees. Just three years later, it earned the authority to confer baccalaureate degrees, evolving as the Lesley College. Then 1954 saw Lesley go higher, now offering graduate degrees. Gradually, it expanded into newer academic arenas like counseling, global studies, art therapy, and management.

There's another pillar of Lesley's journey – the School of Practical Art, founded in 1912 by Roy Davidson. Believing in the union of heart, head, and hand, Davidson envisioned creating an academic art space that was functional and beautiful. The institution embraced fine arts over time, eventually rebranding as the Art Institute of Boston.

1998 was a landmark year for Lesley. The Art Institute of Boston merged with Lesley College. This eventually led to Lesley transforming into a university in 2001. Lesley wasn't content just to switch 'college' to 'university' in its title, she wanted to expand their academic offerings. Hence, two graduate schools were added, and in 2005, Lesley became coeducational.

During 2006, Lesley brushed her shoulders with history, acquiring Prospect Hall, a church with a historic significance. The aim? To move the Art Institute of Boston to Cambridge. Following this, in 2007, Joseph B. Moore held the baton as the president of Lesley University. Under his leadership, the university went on to collaborate with Episcopal Divinity School to manage the Brattle Street campus and to acquire further buildings.

In 2009, as Lesley celebrated its centennial anniversary, it launched a significant construction project, its biggest since the 1970s, adding new dormitories on Wendell Street. Then in 2013, amidst many other developments, the constituent colleges of Lesley University were renamed as College of Art and Design and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

2015 was a significant year, marking the completion of the Lunder Arts Center and the shift of the College of Art and Design from Kenmore Square in Boston to Cambridge. Furthermore, Lesley was honoured with a prestigious Preservation Award from the Cambridge Historical Commission for restoring the historic North Prospect Church as part of the Lunder Arts Centre project.

As Lesley advanced, it experienced changes in leadership. In 2014, Joseph B. Moore announced his retirement. He was succeeded by Jeff A. Weiss and then Richard S. Hansen. Interestingly, in 2018, Lesley purchased the historic buildings that were previously owned by Episcopal Divinity School, making it the sole proprietor of a sprawling 4.4-acre Brattle Campus.

Despite challenges like declining enrollments and retrenchments, Lesley took every opportunity to add to her legacy. In 2021, Lesley experimented with a community-based partnership with DeMello International Center. It is a reflection of Lesley's commitment to evolving and striving for excellence in the realm of education that has kept its tale fascinating for more than a century.
