History Loyola University

In the bustling, rapidly growing city of Chicago, not yet fully established as the city we see today, an ambitious Jesuit priest and renowned educator named Arnold Damen made a move to change the elements of education on June 30, 1870. His vision? The creation of St. Ignatius College, nestled near the city centre along Roosevelt Road, amid the ever-evolving, energetic pulse of the city.

Flash forward to 1909, the distinguished college had undergone a transformation to become Loyola University. The shift was not merely in name- there was an inspiring transition to newer pastures. Just three years later, in 1912, Loyola began to extend its academic roots to the idyllic Lake Shore Campus. Traces of the legacy persist at the original site, where today, St. Ignatius College Prep stands beside the esteemed University of Illinois at Chicago.

Responding to the dynamic needs of the Windy City, Loyola fuelled the professional ambitions of its students with introduction of career-centric disciplines. It gradually embedded law (1908), medicine (1909), business (1922), and nursing (1935) into its curriculum. Alongside these, another feather was added to its academic hat in 1923 when The Chicago College of Dental Surgery became a part of Loyola, before eventually closing its doors 70 years later.

Mustering a progressive mindset, Loyola’s downtown campus bloomed in 1914, and with it came into being the School of Sociology. This pioneer institute gives Loyola the pride of enrolling female students for the first time, well before becoming a fully coeducational institution in 1966. During this period, Dumbach Hall on the Lake Shore Campus housed Loyola Academy, a thriving institute devoted to college preparatory education until its relocation to Wilmette in 1957.

Meticulously planned and crafted, Loyola's current Water Tower Campus was unveiled in 1949. An international footprint was established with the opening of a campus in the heart of Rome in 1962, just near the remembered grounds of the celebrated 1960 Summer Olympics. Seven years later, Loyola brought forth the School of Education along with an extensive consolidation of medical programs at the Loyola University Medical Center, a comprehensive health care unit situated in Maywood, a neighbouring suburb of Chicago.

The year 1970 marked a significant milestone as Loyola legally parted ways with the Jesuits. Since then, lay control governs the institution with a steadfast board of trustees steering the helm of affairs. This was followed by the fruitful acquisition of the adjacent Mundelein College in 1991.

Capital campaigns, specially after the dawn of the century, amplified Loyola's academic stature and greatly enhanced its campuses. The Loyola University Museum of Art saw its inception in 2005 and a generous gesture added the Cuneo Mansion and Gardens, a sprawling 100-acre estate brimming with opulent Italianate architecture and art collections to Loyola's portfolio in 2009.

The decade saw continuous growth with the procurement of the Resurrection Retreat Center in Woodstock for retreats and ecological studies, marking the development of Loyola's fifth campus in 2010. Two years later, Loyola's proud alumnus, Michael R. Quinlan, made a generous donation of $40 million leading to the business school being renamed after him.

Today, with over 200,000 square feet of sustainable spaces built on the Lake Shore Campus and significant mixed-use developments on the Water Tower Campus, Loyola proudly stands among the top 120 universities in the nation. Currently, the university is channeling over $800 million into its ongoing capital construction projects.

A torchbearer in providing quality education to low-income students, Loyola established Arrupe College in 2015. This unique two-year college is dedicated to making Loyola's education accessible to students from varied backgrounds.

Sealing another hallmark moment, Loyola welcomed Jo Ann Rooney as its 24th president on May 23, 2016. Being the first female president, she symbolizes Loyola's commitment towards diversity and equality.

Overall, Loyola University's latitude of progress is a testament of exemplary transformation and reformation in the sphere of education. A cornerstone of knowledge, this institution remains deeply entrenched in its mission to shape enlightened minds, strongly rooted in ethical conduct and social responsibility.
