History Ohio Wesleyan University

Two Ohio residents, Adam Poe and Charles Elliott, had a dream in 1841. They pictured a university of the highest standards rising from the ashes of the Mansion House Hotel, a former health resort famed for its Sulphur Spring. With the funds gathered from the local populace, they brought this vision to life. Their ideals were simple but profound, focusing on the democratic spirit of teaching—a philosophy that was graciously adopted by the Ohio State Legislature when the university's charter was approved. By early 1842, a preparatory academy was up and running, governed by a carefully chosen board of trustees.

Then, on a November day in 1844, the curtains were drawn back, unveiling the Ohio Wesleyan University, an institution inspired by John Wesley, the father of Methodism. It spans across several areas, including a College of Liberal Arts, practiced by male students. That wasn't all, Edward Thomson, the university's first President, echoed the sentiments of the founders in his inaugural address, acknowledging that the university was a tribute to the benevolence of the locals. This philosophy also fueled the university's resistance to slavery during the infamous 1850s era. Furthermore, on George Washington's special day, their second president openly supported the university's democratic principles in his moving oration.

The university thrived during the mid-19th century. It was a time of rapid expansion, attracting new students, introducing new study fields, and escalated fundraising efforts that significantly bolstered its endowment. They built university's first library, known today as Sturges Hall, in 1855. Moreover, they expanded their horizons by establishing the Department of Natural History, nestled in Merrick Hall, by 1873. The Ohio Wesleyan Female College, set up independently in 1853, joined forces with the university in 1877. Their success stretched far and wide, resulting in a tripled enrollment between the years of 1876 and 1888 despite major buildings not being raised during this time.

Around the turn of the century, Ohio Wesleyan saw exponential growth that outpaced many of its contemporaries. Numerous Schools were established, from Music and Fine Arts to Oratory and Business, expanding upon their original College of Liberal Arts. The university soared to fresh heights, with facilities and courses being updated to reflect its new academic standing. Physical structures such as University Hall, Slocum Library, Monnett campus extensions, and athletic facilities were all part of their extended growth. In the meantime, specialized curriculum for physics, zoology, geology, speech, history, French, English, and economics were also being crafted between 1891 and 1895.

The 20th century dawned upon us with Ohio Wesleyan University adopting a different approach to education. Despite providing a more specialized and broadened curriculum and campus landscape, the board decided to maintain their foundation as a college rather than step into the sphere of universities. The university saw some of its brightest stars emerge as Rhodes Scholars in both 1905 and 1909, presenting an excellent reputation that led Phi Beta Kappa, America's oldest undergraduate honor society, to install a chapter right on their campus.

The university weathered the trials and tribulations of the Great Depression durably. Both enrollment numbers and donations from alumni plummeted, but it held steady due to a robust faculty size. Despite their financial strains, the university managed to remain afloat under Edmund D. Soper's, Edward Loranus Rice's, and Herbert John Burgstahler's leadership. Adaptation was the name of the game, with the university ringing in several changes in the curriculum and towards the fields which were thriving—primarily business administration and economics.

Over decades, the university continued to grow, highlighted by the opening of the Hamilton-Williams Campus Center in 1991. The grand success of Ohio Wesleyan can be traced back to 1986 when it was recognized as one of the top 48 highly selective “science-active” liberal arts institutions in the nation. The Battling Bishops, their sports team, tasted multiple triumphs, securing national championships in various fields throughout the years. Despite recent and inevitable enrollment fluctuation, the university remains steadfast in its quest for excellence, staying alive amidst the ocean of liberal arts colleges in the United States.

Today, Ohio Wesleyan University stands as an embodiment of the dreams and aspirations of Adam Poe and Charles Elliott from back in 1841. A university that was conceived with a purpose, nurtured with love, and grown with determination to change the face of education for generations of students. From its humble beginnings to the momentous institution it is now, Ohio Wesleyan University truly is a testament to the power of education.
