Kicking off our journey in the distant year of 1815, Nichols Academy came to life courtesy of a wealthy industrialist named Amasa Nichols. Nichols hailed from Dudley, Massachusetts, and was no stranger to the power of education. However, he wasn't the academy's sole supporter. Other prominent figures like Samuel Slater, a textile manufacturing tycoon, also topped the list of benefactors. Nichols himself was a dedicated Universalist and aimed at molding the institution into a pulsing heart of Universalist education. But by 1823, he withdrew from his trustee position when non-Universalists intruded into the board of directors. Hence, Nichols Academy went through a transformation, becoming a private institution catering to students aged 12 to 21 seeking a "classical" or "English" education.
The development of free public schools took a toll on the academy's enrollment rates though. Post-1871, its trustees joined hands with the town to transmute the academy into Dudley's town high school. This intriguing phase continued until 1909, when the academy bid adieu only to lend its structure, designed by legendary architects like Elbridge Boyden and Charles F. Wilcox, to the town and other educational establishments on lease.
Nichols Academy then saw a new light of day in 1931. Thanks to James L. Conrad who reinvented the place into Nichols Junior College of Business Administration and Executive Training. This two-year college became the hub for men desirous of absorbing business education. It even received authorization from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to confer an Associate Degree in Business Administration in 1938. The campus soon buzzed with activity as over forty-four buildings were bought, constructed, and revamped, giving the campus its modern-day looks.
Fast forward to 1958, the title 'Nichols College' was etched in stone and the place was given the power to dispense a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Credential upgrades kept pouring in throughout the 60s as well. 1965 saw Nichols get accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. Moreover, it joined the league of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the following year.
The doors to co-education opened wide in 1971, and the college was allowed to award BA, BS in Business Administration, and BS in Public Administration degrees. Three years later, the prestigious MBA degree also found its home at Nichols. The highlight of 2005 was Nichols being accredited by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education.
The momentum didn't falter as Nichols was conferred with the right to offer the Master of Science in Organizational Leadership degree in 2007 and the Master of Science in Counterterrorism degree in 2017. Showcasing its commitment to excellence, Nichols College became the cradle for the Alpha Pi chapter of the Delta Mu Delta honor society for business programs in 1961 and the Alpha Phi Sigma honor society for criminal justice programs in 1980.
The year 1980 also saw the inception of the Institute for American Values at Nichols. It went through a name change in 1999, becoming the Robert C. Fischer Policy and Cultural Institute. The institute's mission was to be a catalyst for students' critical examination of current world issues.
In 2013, Nichols surged ahead with its commitment to empowering women by establishing the Institute for Women's Leadership. The same year also marked Nichols hosting the Coalition for the Advancement of Jewish Education Conference.
