Picture this - it’s autumn in 1934. The Holy Cross Fathers in North Dartmouth have outgrown their humble quarters. A surge in seminary enrollment is imminent and demands a shift. Their gaze falls upon an expansive terrain previously owned by Mrs. Frederick Lothrop Ames Jr., great-granddaughter of Oliver Ames Sr., a noted figure who established the Ames Shovel Company in Easton after arriving in 1803.
Securing the purchase on October 17, 1935, they acquired an astounding 350 acres (1.4 km²) of land and the grand Ames mansion. It didn't take them long to extend their dominion over the remaining fertile 190 acres (0.77 km²) purchased from a certain Mrs. Cutler within a span of two years. Imagine owning all that land! Almost surreal, isn't it?
Fast forward to June 30, 1948. Our Holy Cross congregation secures authorization from Massachusetts Commonwealth, transforming the Frederick Lothrop Ames Jr. estate into an educational fortress called Stonehill College. Completely unfathomable, right? Think about it, a majestic mansion evolving to nurture minds.
Do you sense the excitement in the air yet? Hold on tight because in September that same year, the college welcomes its first cohort- 134 eager young men, all equipped to embark on a journey of learning. Lessons echo through the mansion and the Ames Gym, as intellect bridges the gap between past and present.
As the curtain rolls up in February 1949, the Science Building makes a grand entrance. More than just bricks and cement – it’s the embodiment of aspirations and the incubator of innovation. Fast forward to 1974, and the same building gets a fresh look. Renamed the Tracy Science Building, it stands as an ode to David Tracy, a former Stonehill advisor and trustee.
With the dawn of 2009, the Shields Science Centre makes its debut, transforming the Tracy Science Building into Merkert-Tracy Hall after housing the University administration. Convoluted? Maybe a smidge. But isn't it fascinating how buildings and names evolve as the university grows?
