March 14, 1908, the day when Virginia Governor Claude A. Swanson put pen to paper, signing the law that gave birth to State Normal and Industrial School for Women. This was no ordinary school, destined to be a beacon of feminism and progressive education. It would later come to be known by a more distinguishing name, after the grand dame of American history - Mary Ball Washington, the mother of the first US President, George Washington.
Less than a few decades after its establishment, this 'mosaic' of academic excellence for women got its new name - Mary Washington College, in 1938. A move, a recognition of a steadfast woman who called Fredericksburg her home.
The waves of change didn't stop there. In 1944, the college decided to twine its path with the University of Virginia, assuming the proud role of being its women's college. An impactful move at a time when the University of Virginia selectively admitted women only for its education and nursing programs. It was a golden period when the potential and the prowess of women in academic spheres were just starting to get recognition.
A noteworthy shift happened in 1970 when the University of Virginia made the move to coeducational status. Subsequently, in 1972, the Virginia General Assembly embarked on a significant reorganization of the Mary Washington College, transforming it into a separate, coeducational body - an institution that spreads its arms wide open to both genders.
It was in 1988 that the University's Center for Historic Preservation set up the Historic Preservation Book Prize. This annual award chosen by a panel of preservation academics and professionals would end up shining a spotlight on the scholars who dared to pounce on unexplored territories in historic preservation. Among the illustrious recipients of this prestigious accolade have been David Lowenthal, Roy Rosenzweig, Elizabeth Blackmar, Mike Wallace, Richard Longstreth, Francoise Astorg Bollack, Catherine Fleming Bruce (our first African-American awardee), and Thomas Hubka.
The tides of transformation made their presence felt once again in 2004 when the Virginia General Assembly, through legislative action, changed the College's name to the University of Mary Washington. A title more reflective of its growing portfolio of master's degree programs and the landmark decision to establish more than one campus.
2007 marked yet another milestone for the university with the construction of its first LEED-certified building, the CGPS North Building. Even the Fredericksburg Regional Transit System (FRED) found its stop on the University's grounds. In a bold move towards sustainability, the University inked an Energy Performance Contract with NORESCO in 2005. This pact resulted in the fitting of water-saving devices across the campus that successfully brought down water consumption by a staggering 50%. Complementing this eco-initiative were the low-energy light fixtures, occupant sensors, HVAC controls, and the replacement of leaking condensate piping, all installed by NORESCO.
Fast forward to 2022, the University of Mary Washington added another feather to its cap by featuring on the Princeton Review's list of Best Colleges. Back in the day, it began as an endeavor to champion women's education. Over a century later, it stands proud as a beacon of academic excellence, equality, and sustainability.
