History The University of Texas

Dive in, folks, into the riveting story of The University of Texas, or UT as it's casually known. You see, UT's saga starts as far back as 1881 when the idea was just, well, an idea. A bunch of folks in the Texas Legislature thought it was high time their state had a proper, fancy university. They got the idea into motion and, voila, on September 15, 1883, the doors of UT were flung open. Imagine that! Just two years from idea to reality, now that's what you call Texas fast!

The university's orange and white colors, believe it or not, were picked off a lost bet. Back in those starting days, UT's baseball team squared off against their archrival, Tulane Green Wave. Well, the odds' gods decided to tilt in UT's favor and the team ended celebrating victory with garlands of multicolored flowers. The dye of the orange flowers stuck to their white uniforms. There's something charming about the fact that the university's official colors are, in a way, a tribute to a game well played, isn't' it?

Here's a fact that's gonna tickle your funny bone. The university's main tower, an architectural marvel and a big-time tourist attraction, is also a big ol' clock. And before all the modern techie stuff, folks were actually paid to wind it up. Literally! Every week a bloke would trudge up 307 stairs, wind up the clock, and then hike back down. Today, that would be one heck of a fitness challenge, wouldn't it?

Something else that's quite something about this uni is its library. Allow me to paint a mental picture for you; an enormous room, walls covered with books, a hush of studious silence, and look, there's a Gutenberg Bible right in the center! This absolute gem of a book holds pride of place in UT's library, and let me tell ya, it's one of only 21 complete bibles left in the whole wide world! Talk about bookish bragging rights!

Like any other institution worth its salt, UT has had its share of ups, downs, and in-betweens. In the '60s, it was right smack in the middle of the civil rights movement. You had students picketing, boycotting, basically doing their bit to stand up against segregation and racism. Today, the university is known for its commitment to socio-economic diversity, living proof that change can, in fact, start right on campus.

Now, dear readers, we are arriving at a part of UT's history that makes it pretty special for us Indians. In 2018, UT went all out to celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights that is celebrate, back home in India. There was singing, dancing, loads of Indian food, and the night ended with a grand display of fireworks. It's heartwarming, isn't? To have celebrations from home, thousands of miles away.

So there you have it, folks! The tale, the myth, the legend of UT. This institution survived world wars, the great depression, the civil rights movement, and stood tall through it all. Today, The University of Texas is among the finest institutions in all of America. It's proof, loud and clear, that a place of learning can also be a place of transformation. So, to all potential students out there, dare to dream, 'cause at UT, dreams do indeed come true!
