History West Virginia State University

The epic tale of West Virginia State University (WVSU) starts centuries ago when this land was home to the ingenious Mound Builders. This coveted patch of earth was granted to the iconic George Washington by the British government, followed by its evolution into a plantation. Fast forward to the early 19th Century, Samuel I. Cabell, son of Virginia Governor William H. Cabell, found his home in the Kanawha River valley, along with Mary Barnes, a brave ex-slave, and their thirteen children. In 1853 they claimed this land, circling it with a powerful shield of love and security against the ruthless system of slavery.

Moving into a grimmer time, after Sam Cabell's tragic death following the Civil War, his daughter Maria enters the scene. In the late 19th Century, she sold a piece of their ancestral land to the state, ensuring quality education for their kin without crossing state borders. Hence, the West Virginia Colored Institute was born in 1891 under the second Morrill Act. May 1892 marked a historic moment. WVSU opened its doors to more than 40 students, offering a rich curriculum under the leadership of distinguished individuals like President James Edwin Campbell, Byrd Prillerman, and T.C. Friend.

As the 20th Century rang in, the evolution of WVSU was remarkable. The famed African-American educator Booker T. Washington played a pivotal role in elevating the institute to the hub of black intellectual existence in the state, under the presidency of his dear friend Byrd Prillerman. Offering everything from high school education to vocational training to teacher preparation, WVSU was making leaps in racial integration in education.

Our journey takes us down the road to 1915 when the institution dared to venture even further, becoming the West Virginia Collegiate Institute and started awarding college degrees. Under President John Davis's charismatic leadership and the influence of the famous historian Carter G. Woodson, WVSU earned its accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools in 1927. It was a triumphant moment as WVSU was among the first black colleges to earn this honor.

The progressive streak of WVSU didn't end there. Come 1939, WVSU became the first of six historically black colleges to have an aviation program. Its proximity to the Wertz Field airport opened doors for many African-American pilots to join the ranks of the esteemed U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. One such brilliant mind was Rose Agnes Rolls Cousins, who became the first African-American woman to fly solo under the Civilian Pilot Training Program.

In 1954, when the nation was rattled by the Brown v. Board of Education desegregation order, WVSU once again led by example. With the unveiling of the G.I. Bill, the once predominantly Black institution invited students of all backgrounds, inspiring other institutions and earning national acclaim. This transformation led to the birth of the motto "A Living Laboratory of Human Relations".

However, WVSU also faced storms. In 1957, it lost its land grant status due to a lack of state funding despite strong federal laws in place. Nevertheless, under President Hazo W. Carter, Jr, the institute embarked on a decade-long mission to restore its status. This quest culminated in 2001 when Congress finally recognized WVSU as an 1890 land-grant institution once again.

In recent years, WVSU has continued to evolve and innovate. In 2004, it ascended to university status, and in the subsequent years, it expanded its offering to include graduate degrees in high-demand fields such as Biotechnology, Media Studies, Law Enforcement and Education. Today, Ericke S. Cage leads the university, endeavouring to strengthen the institute's commitment to research and teaching.

Narrating the story of WVSU is incomplete without the remarkable individuals who shaped its journey. From President James Edwin Campbell's poetry and mathematical prowess to President John H. Hill's bravery in the Spanish-American war and President Nicole Pride's milestone as the first female president, each leader has scripted indelible chapters in WVSU's illustrious history.

Closing this journey, we find ourselves in the present day, where the university continues to carve its niche, standing a living testament to its motto and setting an example for the world. It is not just an educational institution, but a symbol of resilience, progress, and determination, reflective in every brick, every page, and certainly every graduate it produces.
